Animal Shelter Adoptables

Scroll down to see our current adoptables - and our gallery of adopted, fostered or transported pets who have been saved with the help of this page. Sharing on social media does save lives!
The Shoofly Magazine updates this page with new adoptables twice a month. Since these pups could be adopted at any time, contact the Hancock County Animal Shelter to find out the current availability of these and more! It's located at 7175 Texas Flat Rd., in Kiln, MS (228) 466-4516.
Note: the Hancock Shelter has a major over-crowding problem. Though staffers and volunteers would love for it to be a "no-kill" shelter, it's not. Recent budget constraints have made for hard decisions.
Dogs below labeled "At Risk" are those who've been at the shelter a long time or have a health issue. They face an untimely end when the shelter's overcrowded. Fostering - even for a few days or weeks - can help save these "at risk" dogs.

Max - at risk
MAX is a handsome 2 yr old terrier mix, who may be strong, but he has a heart of gold to match. He has striking good looks as well as a great personality. And the most expressive ears on the planet. He even knows how to sit on command!
Max would be an awesome best buddy for a single person/couple or young adult (teenager), interested in an energetic pal to share activities, long walks, and good times. Max has yet to meet any young children at the shelter, but we will update his post in time. He gets along well with the other dogs in his living area. He is yearning to bond with his "someone special" or a family with active teenagers. Max would be best suited to a home with a fenced backyard, as he does enjoy romping-n-playing in our exercise yard. Please come meet Max! He's a great dog! |
MAX Update - 12/16
Just Cause Pit Bull Rescue is willing to take Max under its wing - which means they stick with him until they find a good home (and do home checks to make sure it's good!). All they need to spring Max from the shelter is a good foster home and donations to help cover his care until a home is found.

Donate any amount to help Max with the Paypal button right here and contact Jeanne Montana, Just Cause director, if you can foster Max. The sooner he can get out of the shelter, the better.
Charlie
This strikingly handsome fella is CHARLIE, a 4 yr old American Bulldog/Mastiff mix, who has a heart to match his stature. He truly loves people, including children, as well as other dogs of varying size and demeanor. Because Charlie doesn't know his size, and, in fact, thinks he's a lap dog, we recommend that he joins a home with school aged children and older. He would also be the coolest best buddy ever for a single person/couple or retires looking for a stellar companion.
Charlie thrives on any kind of interaction with people. He enjoys going for walks, romping-n-playing outdoors, cuddling and having his sides and belly rubbed, and, well, you get the picture! 😉 Charlie is a favorite of our dedicated kennel tech Christina, who will tell you, "Charlie is my boy!" He sure has charmed our staff and volunteers with his "gentle giant" kinda personality.
This mellow, sweet natured boy does have a couple of flaws... he must join a home with at least an 8ft fence and NO livestock! He can easily jump a standard chain link fence. He also is not a good match for a home with cats. If you feel your home and family would be a good fit for Charlie, then we invite you to come meet our "Charlie Boy!" He most certainly will bring joy into the lives of his new family!
*Charlie's adoption fee is $75, which includes neutering, worming, vaccines, microchip, 30 days of free pet insurance, and a free vet check with one of our participating veterinarians.

Cane
CANE is a 3 yr old Mountain Cur/Mastiff mix, who loves everyone he meets...other friendly dogs, children, and he even seems to like cats! He is leash trained, behaves well when kenneled, and may even be house trained. He sits on command, accepts treats gently and is a perfect gentleman.
CANE is the proverbial "gentle giant" with an easy-going mellow temperament. He is neutered, wormed, up-to-date on vaccines, microchipped, and upon adoption, he receives 30 days of free pet insurance, and a free vet check with one of our participating veterinarians. Cane's adoption fee is $65, which includes all of the aforementioned services.

Patches
Patches is a striking looking Catahoula Leopard mix who was found wandering around Claiborne Hill grocery in Waveland, right off Highway 90 and 603. He's about four year old by intake estimates and has a worldly way about him. He's calm and curious, with eyes that seem hopeful. No owners stepped forward, but it's clear he belonged to someone and feels a loyalty that wasn't reciprocated by his former human.
You can earn the loyalty, devotion and trust of Patches. It won't be hard. Go meet him and you'll see what we mean.

Whiskey
If we're posting a ton of photographs of Whiskey, it's because he's so photogenic! Read more about him below, but right now he just needs a temporary foster - he's slated to take his freedom ride up North on January 18th and needs to be out of the shelter until then! Call the Hancock Shelter to give this glamour boy his second chance!
We are searching for an approx 3 week foster home for WHISKEY until he leaves on rescue transport in January. Please let's find this awesome boy a place to crash while he awaits this life-saving opportunity in the Northeast (Maine)! Call us at 228-466-4516, if you can foster Whiskey!
This fine looking guy is WHISKEY, a 3 yr old American Pit bull Terrier mix, who is as affectionate as he is handsome.
Whiskey has a sad back story...he was rescued by a Good Samaritan who found him eating corn in a hunting camp. He came right to her when called, happy to see a kind person, and he played excitedly with his rescuer. In fact, Whiskey was ready to get out of there, and jumped right into the truck. This obedient boy is most definitely used to traveling and is comfortable in a vehicle. The nice lady who saved Whiskey told us that he loved everyone he met on his journey, is very smart, and knows basic commands.
Our volunteers spent some time with him this week, and discovered that he does indeed sit on command, and is especially motivated by treats. He loves being outdoors, exploring the shelter grounds and playing with our volunteers, too. He is just an all-around great dog...great with other dogs and kids, too! Whiskey is a strong boy, and very active, so it is recommended that he join a family with school aged children or older. He would be an awesome buddy, though, for active teenagers, or a single person/couple, looking for an energetic activity partner. Please come give Whiskey the second chance he so deserves!

Bindi - Needs a Foster
This goofy, loving girl is BINDI. She is a 4 year old Pug/Bulldog mix searching for a "furever" home. Bindi came into the shelter with no fur at all! She was diagnosed with Demodex mange, which is non-contagious.
Thanks to our vet and a long 10-month healing process, her lovely fur has finally regrown. However, she still needs to be bathed once a week with special shampoo and kept on Nexguard each month to complete the healing process. But, she is now available for adoption!

Bindi has been kenneled way too long at Riverbend Vet Hospital in Diamondhead - she's been there ELEVEN MONTHS now. She has been taken under the wing of Just Cause Rescue, which has a team actively looking for a foster. She deserves someone to give her more love and attention than she has been receiving during treatment. This playful girl is full of life and loves to eat! She is, however, very timid at first, and cautious and territorial if she does not know you, but once she warms up to you, she reveals her loving and goofy self - as you can see above.
If you or someone you know would be interested in fostering sweet BINDI, contact Jeanne Montana, Just Cause director.

Cutest Puppies Ever
These babes are just two of many at the shelter who would love to be frolicking around your tree on Christmas morning. Come to the shelter and check out these fuzzy bundles of love and fun!
Faith and Hope
These two were picked up wandering together in Hancock County and are probably siblings - definitely a bonded pair. They needed to be to survive. They're so skinny, ribs stand out from their bodies. Their fawn coats are covered with scars, old and new. They'd both been used for breeding and had lots of litters. They're both heart worm positive. In other words, they weren't going to have a Pet Smart adoption opportunity.
Shortly before being euthanized, Just Cause Pit Bull Rescue took them under its 501c3 wing. They've been boarded, spayed, had shots and now are undergoing a rigorous heart worm treatment. They have to be confined for two months, only going for leash walks. During the treatment, they're being fostered by Judee English in Waveland (of Dirt to Diamonds home maintenance). They're house-trained and wait for their walks to do their business, so other than yearning to play, they're being their sweet selves.

If you'd like to have Faith or Hope in your life, contact Jeanne Montana, Just Cause director. If you can donate any amount to Just Cause to help with their care and recovery, just tap the Pay Pal button. You don't even have to have a Paypal account, you can donate with a credit card. Simply note that the donation is for Faith and Hope.
Faith (on the left below) is the bolder of the two, while Hope (right) is more timid, very unsure of herself without Faith (it works that way with humans too, doesn't it?). |
