On July 1, Amtrak and the Southern Rail Commission held multiple press conferences from Mobile to New Orleans to announce the official start of rail service between the two cities. Turnout was the largest by far in Bay St. Louis, where the community dressed up and turned out in large numbers to herald the long-awaited news. Our team covered the events in Mobile, BSL, and New Orleans.

In Bay St. Louis, Ross also noted that SRC commissioner Kay Kell – who's been working on getting rail service across the coast for 30 years - "kept the lights on this [project] when nobody else did... I just want you to remember when that train pulls up, you think of Kay." Kay Kell with Knox Ross. | Photo by Gregg Martel
