Hillery was hesitant at first, but after some time reflecting, she realized she was building her legacy, “I’m proud of it,” she said. “When that name goes up, I’m going to bring my grandchildren and say, ‘Hey look, it’s the Mamo Building.’” Artists have been looking for opportunities to share their work in Hancock County for years. Hillery’s philanthropic work has made these opportunities possible by providing a space for artists to gather in. She explained, “I love the arts. I wanted to have a place with classes and workshops and provide an environment where artists can be around other artists.” Hillery’s first action was purchasing the building, which has since been renovated, through consistent support, from what once looked like a warehouse to the artistically designed, inviting showcase it is now.
Board members for the Arts Hancock County find Mamie’s energy to be contagious. John Anderson, board member and building architect, noted, “We’re really trying to honor all of the things she’s done for us, it’s not just financial. She keeps this group going, and we really wanted to celebrate that.” The design for Hillery’s name, which will be incorporated into the building architecture, is in the development process. Several artists have contributed ideas, and Anderson expects the design to be finalized soon. “We’ve been working on this project for a long time,” said Anderson. “To see it all come together and get everybody here is nice to celebrate. And of course, to recognize Mamie, that’s the big thing for us. Anderson’s vision and dedication to the building project are also worth noting. The bright pink letter “A” stands approximately twenty feet tall from the ground and brightens the spirit of the window-covered façade. The recently completed landscaping features a plush green grass lawn accented by activity and social areas, red rock walkways, and rose gardens. The building has become a Bay St. Louis landmark. The Hancock County Chamber of Commerce’s Beautification Committee presented the Mamie Hillery Arts Center with its Excellence in Beautification Award at the naming ceremony on Friday, November 15. Guests enjoyed a beautiful evening, with hors d‘oeuvres, chargrilled oysters, and wine provided by Spoon Fed by Jessica Spoo. Patrons also had the opportunity to support the organization by bidding on any of 113 silent auction pieces, including donations from local businesses, artists, authors, and bakeries.
“It was a spectacular event,” said Liz Maio, guest and friend of the honoree. “The weather was perfect, and it was a beautiful evening.” Last Friday’s event came together with the help and support of a host of volunteers and Arts of Hancock County operations managers, specifically: Cecelia Hopes, Gretchen Lederer, and Angelle Carbone.
