Take a stroll down Coleman Avenue and enjoy the beautiful banners posted on the light poles honoring Waveland residents who served our country. These banners are part of a program presented by American Legion Post 77, Waveland. For information on how to donate to this worthy cause or sponsor a banner for a family member, visit www.legionpost77ms.org.

Flag Retirement Ceremony
Please mark your calendars for American Legion Post 77’s annual Flag Retirement Ceremony. The ceremony will take place at the Veterans Memorial on Coleman Avenue on July 6 at 7:30 pm. The public is encouraged to participate by dropping off any American flag in need of retirement (tattered, faded and/or torn). There will be a box outside the front door of Post 77 where you can deposit your flag to be readied for the ceremony. If you have never participated in this solemn event, you don’t want to miss it.

Dr. Bill Bradford Bench Dedication
On June 19, friends and family of Dr. William "Bill" Bradford dedicated a bench in front of the Waveland Library. His fitness friends of the Waveland Library provided the bench, and the Bay-Waveland Garden Club donated landscaping. Dr. Bill was an icon in Waveland. Even if you didn’t know him, you probably saw him from time to time riding his bike. Dr. Bill spent his life caring for others as a doctor, a devout member of St. Clare Catholic Church, and serving at the Methodist Church’s soup kitchen. He entertained so many with his stories, inspired with his compassion, and educated with his knowledge. He was a beloved by all who knew him and is terribly missed. Stop by the Waveland Library and have a seat on the green bench, rest a moment, and say a little prayer for Dr. Bill. We can only hope to touch as many in our lifetimes as he has, and to leave such a loving impression on the Earth.

Janita Cole

Featured Employee of the Month:  Janita Cole
Janita Cole’s career with the City of Waveland has spanned twenty years. She has worked for nearly every department in the city except the police and fire departments. As a valued and integral member of the city’s team, Janita was one of only three employees who remained active when the city furloughed its staff during the Garcia administration.

Janita has been extremely active in community service her entire career. As a lifelong member of St. Rose de Lima Catholic Church, she is a part of St. Rose’s Outreach and Recovery, serves in the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary, and chairs St. Rose’s event committee for the Annual Blues and Barbecue Festival, which will take place June 28-29. Janita is also very involved with her daughter’s nonprofit, Niquee’s Journee, which aids and guides students in need from 17-24 years old. She ran the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in Waveland for two years. Other organizations Janita works with are FURHRO, Coastal Family Health Center, the Sickle Cell Foundation, and the Red Cross.

Janita was born and raised in Bay St. Louis and has lived in Waveland for 28 years. She attended OLA, graduated from Bay High School in 1990, and earned her Associate’s degree from PRCC. Janita is the daughter of John and Darlene Labat Lee and is the oldest of their five children.
Janita has very close ties to our community and has always worked hard to be of service to those in need. The City of Waveland is fortunate to have her as a dedicated employee for so long. Thank you, Janita, for your service to the city and the community!
