In early February, The Library Foundation of Hancock County opened The Second Line Used Bookstore with a huge selection of CDs, audio books, DVDs, movies, puzzles - and of course, books. - by Sally Isaacs, the Library Foundation of Hancock County Once a mere storage room inside the Bay St. Louis branch at 312 Highway 90, The Second Line Bookstore is a sunlit, easy-to-navigate space filled with well-labeled shelves for easy browsing. On opening day there were over 3,500 books on the shelves, offering something for everyone: from the family cook, to the history buff, and plenty of quality children’s books. They want every household in Hancock County to be filled with beautiful books from The Second Line. New books arrive almost daily. One loyal customer visits weekly, bringing a large tote and a list of books and DVDs that she is looking for. Her recommendation: Plan to stay a while, take your time, and browse all the shelves. The Second Line is run entirely by volunteers and welcomes help organize the stacks, price books, or help customers find that perfect book or movie. Volunteer Paula Wells said, “My favorite part of volunteering is getting to meet so many people from our community! It’s not just a book store; it’s a place to make new friends. And with the new Tea Library, it’s a party!” Anyone interested in volunteering can email [email protected]. All materials for sale are donated by the community. Donations can be dropped off at any Hancock County library branch. The Second Line does not accept donations of magazines, encyclopedias, VHS or cassette tapes, or books that are damaged. Proceeds benefit the Hancock County Library System. Jessie Whitehead, who also volunteers at the bookstore, recently noted, “Working as a volunteer is a rewarding and relaxing experience that allows me to connect with fellow book lovers. It is gratifying to contribute to a community enterprise that gives books and other items a second life.” Be sure to check out the Second Line Used Bookstore Facebook page for special pricing and promotional sales. Current hours for The Second Line are Tuesdays 10 to 6, Wednesdays and Thursdays 10 to 4, and Saturdays 10 to 2. Enjoy this feature?Comments are closed.
