"Art Without Walls" Provides a Venue for Local Artists

Coast residents longing for more opportunities to purchase work by local artists will soon have their wishes fulfilled with the new series of pop-up markets called “Art Without Walls.”

Produced by The Arts, Hancock County, the series “Art Without Walls” invites members of the nonprofit organization to set up booths in the Bay St. Louis Depot District, located on the grounds of the new Arts Center at 405 Blaize Avenue (just a block from the historic BSL depot).
 
The series begins with dates on four different holiday Saturdays: November 20, November 27, December 4 and December 11. The market opens at noon and runs until sunset on each of the dates.

Organizers say that the Art Without Walls markets will continue in 2022, with additional dates being announced in January.

Artists who are already members of The Arts, Hancock County will not be charged a booth fee for the 10X10 exhibit space in the market. Coast artists who are not members of the organization but would like to participate can join The Arts, Hancock for only $35 a year ($50 for a business) and will receive free booth space at every pop-up art market for the remainder of the year.

This will be the first venture of its kind for The Arts, Hancock County, now housed in the former studio of Mardi Gras designer Carter Church. Thanks to a very generous donation by Mamie Hillery, The Arts, Hancock County now has its own home and the ability to branch out and expand artistic offerings to the community.
 
The new building will transform into a “center for community engagement in support of a broad range of artistic endeavors,” said John Anderson, board president of The Arts, Hancock County.

This knowledge got several members of the organization discussing that more venues were needed to showcase community artists. Currently the Mockingbird Café, Gallery 220 and the Bay Artists Co-op are all terrific venues for local artists, there are many who struggle to find available space.
 
Several members of the Arts, Hancock County brainstormed on ways to offer more venues, and the idea for the Art Without Walls “pop-up” market was born. The organization’s board was quick to approve and encourage the development of the idea. Less than six weeks later, the first market will become a reality.

​When the Art Without Walls market opens on November 20, there will be a variety of art available: paintings, woodcrafts, dolls, jewelry, clothing, pottery, literature, and much more.
  
The creative team is busy updating the “Art Without Walls-Bay St. Louis” Facebook page with photos from participating artists such as Emma Connolly and Rosie Dumoulin of Flat Creek Studios. Everyone is welcome to visit and follow the page for sneak peeks.
