Animated Vs. Animals

The Pokémon GO craze may have more people walking around outdoors, but they're oblivious to local flora and fauna, in pursuit of tiny cartoons.

School children on the duck pond bridge, before the Pokémon infestation.
Gigi is my guide.

She is nine and I am 59.  I have since learned that is an age spread not unusual with players of Pokémon GO.

While I am a Pokémon novice, I’m in capable hands.  Gigi Madden has captured and imprisoned dozens of the little cartoon creatures on her smart phone over the past several weeks, which is the object of this new game.  She has kindly volunteered to teach me how to play.

She has brought me to the grounds of the historic depot in Bay St. Louis, a gathering spot for some of the rarest Pokémon creatures.   The depot grounds are also bristling with places where players can restock the balls that they use to capture the digital beasties.

The Company of Trees

It turns out the trees are social beings that have feelings and can communicate.  Some folks aren't surprised.

Ouida Sue: at an estimated 540 years old, she's the oldest live oak tree in Bay St. Louis,
Recently, I had the opportunity to meet the oldest tree in Bay St. Louis.   She’s registered under the name  Ouida Sue.  Who knows what she calls herself?  Ouida Sue is estimated to be 540 years old.

It’s hard to imagine the coast when that tree was a sapling.  Columbus hadn’t stumbled onto this hemisphere yet.  Humans didn’t even know there were such things as hemispheres.  Buffalo still roamed right here in Hancock County.  We know that because the explorer Bienville’s men hunted them in 1699, when Ouida Sue was a mere 223 years old.

This is a tree with some stories to tell.  And maybe someday, humans will be able to understand her language.

Way Back When

Most people know Nan Parati as one of the creative forces of Jazz Fest and owner of Elmer's, an iconic New England restaurant.  Here's the little-known backstory of her first creative enterprise.

Nan Parati at the Jazz Fest Sign Barn - photo by Ellis Anderson
In the 1980s, my friend Nan Parati worked for Jimmy Buffet as a set designer.  Her pièce de résistance creation was a huge fake volcano.  At concerts, when tens of thousands of people started singing along with Jimmy, “I don’t know where I’m a gonna go when the volcano blows,” actual fireworks would shoot out of the top of that landmass-sized prop.  The volcano caught on fire once, but no one was seriously hurt and the crowd thought it was all part of the show.  That’s another story.

The point is that’s the kind of mind Nan has.  Need a great show finale?  How about a volcanic eruption?  Impossible?  Hardly.  Where there’s Nan’s will, there’s a way.

Senior Class

Going back to college as an older adult can be challenging and rewarding.  Here are seven tips to help you make the grade.

Since I’m 59 years old, most of my college classmates could technically be my grandchildren. Yet, apparently I’ve got lots of company.  According the American Council on Education, adult learners now make up an astonishing 40 percent of people attending college nationwide.

Older adults enrolled in college are usually called “non-traditional” students and we attend for a variety of reasons.  While most are seeking career advancement or new job skills, some are embracing continuing education as a way to stimulate their minds.  Others are pursuing passions that jobs or parenthood pushed to the back burner.  A few, like me, want the satisfaction of getting a degree they wanted to pursue earlier in life.

The Last Straw

How a group of BSL residents are teaming up to just "say no" to drinking straws.  Why does it matter?  You might be surprised!

Sometimes ideas in Bay St. Louis hitch a ride on the submerged collective consciousness, and start popping up all over town.

The Last Straw concept, for instance.  One day when my husband and I were ordering lunch at a local restaurant, Larry told the server that he didn't want a straw with his tea.  The waitress looked at him in surprise and I did too.  When she left the table, I asked why.

“I was just doodling around with some numbers after our last lunch out,” he said.  “I figured out that if only a third of Americans use one straw a day, and you lined them all up, in 19 days you could reach the moon.”

A Keeper Kind of Resolution

Letters of gratitude can work magic, even if they're never even mailed.  It's a scientific fact.

Like most folks, I march into the beginning of each new-numbered year with a list of resolutions.  Each year, it gets shorter — or at least modified.

For instance, I know I’m not going to lose enough weight to fit into that fabulous size six dress I’ve been hanging onto for the past decade.

Instead, most of my resolutions have been whittled down to ambiguous assignments “eat healthier,” “exercise more” and “sing often.”  That way, there’s less guilt involved when I inevitably don’t live up to my self-imposed expectations.
