And First Came the Artists

11/1/2017

Talk of the Town - November 2017
Artists are the backbone of our community - bringing vitality to our economy, improving our quality of life and attracting visitors, new residents and businesses. Find out what you can do to support the artists who keep on giving!

The annual Frida Fest - produced without any government funding - attracts hundreds of people to Bay St. Louis each year, with a year-round slow-burn positive impact.
There’s no chicken or the egg mystery when it comes to how the arts have helped Bay St. Louis flourish over the past four decades:

A number of artists began moving to the Bay (in a large part led by Jerry Dixon, founder of Serenity Gallery)  in the mid-80s, opening galleries and studios.

The Bay developed a reputation as an creative community, making national lists like “100 Best Small Art Towns,” or “Coastal Dream Towns.”   In every recognition, the lively local arts scene has been named as a primary factor for being chosen.   The national publicity generates priceless positive publicity for our town and attracts visitors and new residents/businesses.  And it's a major reason that real estate in the Bay commands some of the highest prices in the state.

Art events throughout the year build the sense of community, as well as boosting the local economy.  There’s the annual Arts Alive!, Frida Fest (celebrating the birthday of artist Frida Kahlo) and the Mermaid’s Arts & Crafts show.

The monthly Second Saturday Artwalk (a veteran event that’s more than 25 years old!) pulls a lion’s share of weight for community enhancement and prosperity.  New events like the Downhome Blues Music Series work double-duty too, entertaining locals, as well as  building our reputation as a desirable place to live and do business.

The Bay is a shining example of Mississippi's creative economy.

Picture

Incredibly, not a dime of local taxpayer money is budgeted by local governments for producing or promoting any of the arts events listed above (although they may help out with extra patrols, etc.).  These events are self-supporting and self-funding for the most part, with Hancock Tourism lending a hand when they have available grant funding.

These events occur only because of local organizations, like The Arts, Hancock County, the Old Town Merchants Association and the Alice and Tim Moseley Foundation and dozens of artist volunteers and generous merchants, who donate time and money and a creative can-do spirit (to name only a few - Smith & Lens Gallery, the Mockingbird Café, The French Potager, Gallery 220 and Bay Life).

So how can you help support this self-sufficient cultural community that uplifts our lives and generates enormous economic benefits for us all?

Easy.
Picture

1.  Join in and roll up your sleeves.  You don’t have to be an artist or a merchant – just an appreciator of all these organizations do. Volunteer to help.  If you're more a left-brain type, these groups always need help with things like clerical work, delivery, event staffing.  You can also purchase a membership or simply donate.  They’re all 501c3s, so donations are tax-deductible.
  • The Arts, Hancock County ($35 annually).
  • Old Town Merchants Association (inquire about associate memberships and donations)
  • Alice and Tim Moseley Foundation (levels start at $25 annually)

2.  Spread the word.  Social media sites like Facebook and Instagram make it simple to share news about our artists and local events with friends and business customers.

“Liking” or "loving" an arts-related post helps, while taking a moment to "share" with a brief introductory comment really has a long reach.  On social media, comments are king.  You’ll have more impact than you could imagine.

On Facebook, follow:
  • The Arts, Hancock County, MS
  • Old Town Bay St Louis
  • Alice Moseley Folk Art and Antique Museum
  • Hancock County Tourism Bureau
  • The Shoofly Magazine (yep, that's us!  We'll keep you up with all the cool happenings!)
On Instagram:
  • Hancockarts
  • Baystlouisoldtown
  • Bslshoofly

3.  Buy Art.  Take "shopping local" one step further by buying a painting, a photograph or a piece of pottery from a neighborhood artist or one of the galleries/shops in Old Town that make Bay St. Louis the place you’re proud to call home.

Have a loved one with a creative hankering?  You can even purchase gift certificates for lessons with local artists (see our list at the end of this story!).

Below are art-related holiday happenings – we’ll be adding to it throughout the season.  You can also check in at our Community Calendar or our Upcoming Events page at any time.

The Cottage at 215 Main Street

This charming cottage built in 1910 gives visitors a chance to experience life like the locals in the very heart of Old Town!

If Bay St. Louis is really sort of a ‘Mayberry by the Sea,” the Cottage at 215 Main should have been Opie’s address.  Built in 1910, with a wrapping porch and a bay window that looks out onto Main Street, it’s the sort of house where the adults would have sat on out in the summer evenings, drinking sweet tea and watching the kids playing in the picket-fenced yard.

But these days, there’s a lot more happening in Old Town’s Arts district.  With restaurants, galleries, dozens of boutique shops, the new harbor, the beach and the fishing pier are all within a few blocks,  the cottage is located in the thick of one of the most vibrant and merry art towns in America.

Which is a perfect situation for the guests that stay at 215 Main, which now serves as a furnished vacation rental.  It’s available for rent by the night (two-night minimum), the week or the month.

To reserve your stay at the cottage, call owners/artists Jenise or Mark at:
228.466.6347!

Or email them here!
The cottage sleeps four people:  One bedroom offers twin beds, while a cool Murphy bed pulls down from a closet in the living room.  There’s a comfy front parlor that’s great for reading, as well as an eat-in galley kitchenette.   The front porch and cottage garden make living outside irresistible, even on summer days.

Since the cottage is kid and pet friendly, 215 Main can be rented as headquarters for a family stay in Old Town or as a romantic getaway.  It even comes with two bicycles for exploring the miles of nearby biking/walking trails (along the beach or across the bay bridge) or taking the Historic Biking/Walking tour of Old Town.

Second Saturday Artwalk in Old Town - February 14th

Picture
You'll find love all over Old Town this month - this is work by artist Spencer Gray at Gallery 220
By a happy coincidence of the calendar, February’s Second Saturday Artwalk falls on February 14, Valentine’s Day, making the monthly artwork and open house celebration in Old Town a bit sweeter.

The combination of Second Saturday and Valentine’s Day actually is a perfect pairing, considering shoppers will look for jewelry, flowers, artworks and other special gifts in shops and galleries around Old Town and then enjoy dinner for two (or more) at the nearby restaurants.

Second Saturday’s two hotspots — Cypress Cafe (300 S. Second Street) and The Palm House Cottage — have plans to enhance the Valentine’s Day celebration.

Cypress Cafe

300 S. Second Street
Bay St. Louis, MS  39520
228. 466. 4877

Picture
Cypress Cafe, usually open for lunch only, will welcome guests on Second Saturday with special dinner service in its famous casual style in honor of Valentine’s Day. Dinner specials feature soup or salad, entrée of your choice and a special dessert. But you can always order from Cypress Cafe’s delicious menu. A Chocolate Truffle Treat with be included with all food orders on Valentine's night.

Since opening in 2010, Cypress Cafe has earned loyal fans who come back regularly to enjoy the soups, salads, specialty sandwiches, burgers, “chicks,” and wraps, which are all made to order. And yes, the desserts in the glass display case are as delicious as they look.

Besides the fantastic food, the Cypress Cafe is known for its roomy dining room’s brick walls with large windows. Guests can enjoy views of the huge oak tree and historic gazebo on the grounds of the historic 1905 City Hall.

Owner Holly Lemoine-Raymond has crafted the room’s furnishings and accent pieces, including the namesake cypress tables. The boutique cafe is steeped in local history and boosts one truly unusual feature: a trio of small jail cells near the bustling kitchen.

Shopping blends right in with a visit to Cypress Cafe and on Second Saturday all retail will be on sale. Look for specialty soaps, gourmet items and other one-of-a-kind gifts during your visit. And you might want to keep an eye out for possible paranormal activity in the cafe. The building has been under investigation by TAPS and Ghost Chasers of Mississippi.

The Palm House Cottage

217 Union St.
Bay St. Louis, MS  39520
504-729-0887

Picture
At Union and Hancock stands the historic Palm House, a 19th Century private residence and its Palm House Cottage, which is available for rent. Owners Grace and Christian Birch of New Orleans bought the property a year ago, and Grace has been discovering family connections on every weekend visit to their new community.

“We bought it in January and on Valentine’s weekend we were moving in and falling in love with the place,” Grace said. The location is within easy walking distance to shops, restaurants, festivals and the beach, but the Palm House has a special atmosphere. “It feels like a retreat,” she said.

The main house is perfect for their multi-generational family members, while the charming guest cottage is ideal for visitors looking for a romantic getaway. “The cottage has hosted people on their honeymoon and a couple celebrating their 20th anniversary,” Grace said.

The cottage sleeps up to four and features a private patio, kitchenette, washer/dryer, jacuzzi tub and private parking.

“The cottage is fully outfitted for a really nice romantic stay,” Grace said. “And it’s just steps from where Second Saturday happens and the park next door has the duck pond and farmer’s market. We’re so excited about every new thing we find in town and getting to share it with our guests.”

For Second Saturday, Ann Wilson, Grace’s mother, and Anna Birch, Christian’s mother, will welcome guests to the Palm House with handmade Valentine’s cookies and hot apple cider. The family also plans to offer treats prepared by Rickey’s Off the Tracks, located a few steps from the Palm House.

Heart Throbs - Stoop Kids take Mockingbird Stage for Valentine's 2nd Sat.
Started by Griffin Dean in 2012, Stoop Kids’ music jumps between genres like hip-hop, doo-wop, jazz, psychedelic rock, funk, and everything in between. Their sound has been called a blend of “Beach Boys meets the Beastie Boys”. After the release of their debut album “What a World” Stoop Kids transformed into a live band with the addition of Thomas (baritone sax), David (keys/guitar), Patrick (bass), and Joe (percussion). In contrast to the relaxed sound of their recorded music, the live band is known for their upbeat and engaging performances. Over the course of 2015, Stoop Kids will be releasing a wide variety of content: new website, music video, live performance videos, and a new album.

  • Merchant Specials - Several Old Town Merchants are offering specials to benefit "Friends" during the 2nd Saturday Artwalk from 4 - 8pm!

If you don't know someone who is a member of Friends of the Animal Shelter, Hancock County, you may not be aware of what an incredible job these folks do to save animal lives and ease the suffering of our fellow furry creatures.
Now, local realtors have teamed up with Friends to benefit the group while showcasing some fantastic local homes.  The Dog Days of Summer home tour is the brainchild of Steve Haas (Gardner Realtors) and during this first time event, taking place between 4 - 6pm on August 10th during Second Saturday, for every single person who visits each open house, the realtors will donate one pound of food to Friends.
It can add up FAST:  for instance, if six people go to all six houses on the tour, that's a hefty forty pound bag of food!  Click here for all the details, a map and pics/info of the houses on the tour!  Then spread the word!
