Coast Cuisine - August 2021
Bright, fresh menu updates, tasty libations and new outdoor seating are exciting the many fans of the Mockingbird Café.

When fans of the Mockingbird Cafe got their first look at the new menu this summer, they welcomed the new items and applauded the return of a few old favorites as well. Avocado toast’s return got a shoutout on social media, and so did the returning breakfast burrito.

“We still have the classics, but we’ve added some lighter fare to our menu,” said owner Alicein W. Schwabacher.

The menu refresh has become a summer ritual at the ‘Bird. It’s a time for the kitchen to try out new items and tweak the rest of the menu. “We keep what works and what people want,” Alicein said of the updates.

The cafe’s two-page menu gives top-billing to breakfast, where the aforementioned burrito holds a prominent place. It comes in meat or veggie versions that can be transformed into a bowl if you’re dodging carbs.

Other breakfast choices include the 2nd Street sandwich served on a brioche bun, waffle or croissant, and buttermilk-fried chicken atop a Belgian waffle. On the sweet side, choose the Belgian waffle or French toast. Standards like a sausage biscuit or biscuit & gravy round out the breakfast list.

In the sandwich section, longtime favorites such as the Mockingburger, Scout and Summer Garden burger are served with house-made chips or either fries or fresh fruit.

A few new entries top the “Eat Like a Bird” menu, including popular Avocado Toast on nine-grain bread with spinach and goat cheese. The new Sunshine Quinoa Bowl and Wonderland Salad add some healthy depth for diners hungry for tasty, lighter meals.

The bowl combines fresh spinach and quinoa, avocado, goat cheese, pickled onion and a boiled egg, served refreshingly cold. The new salad also has spinach and goat cheese along with apples, walnuts, cranberries and a white Balsamic vinaigrette. Frittata of the Bay, another long-standing favorite, comes in meat or veggie versions.

The menu also highlights some creative Libations, led by the cleverly named Tequila Mockingbird. Wine and local craft beer also are served to those of legal drinking age.

The menu isn’t the only thing new at the Mockingbird. A newly constructed addition dubbed “Birdgarden” is a covered space with built-in seating off the wide porch of the historic building. Unabridged architecture designed the new outdoor addition.

The Mockingbird recently announced new hours in light of the staffing shortage that many businesses are facing now. Starting Aug. 16, Mockingbird Cafe will be open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, except on Second Saturdays.

“Also, our goal is to serve our community the freshest food with the kindest service. That’s why we chose to cut back our hours, so that we can continue to do so,” Alicein said. She also gives credit to “our entire Mockingbird team and amazing managers: Laura Hurt, general manager, and Whitney LaFrance, operations manager.”
