Old Town goes "green" for the April Second Saturday Artwalk, with many galleries, shops and restaurants participating in "Plastic Free April."

Click here to read more about this grassroots effort to protect our Gulf waters.

Many restaurants in Old Town will be participating in "Straws on Request" and are exploring the possiblilties of using compostable take-out containers.   Businesses throughout Old Town are now carrying cloth bags for groceries and glass water bottles.

Three fun awareness-raising booths will be set up at Bay Eporium (112 South Second Street).

1. Demonstration and teaching methods of tying Furoshiki fabric wraps to make shopping bags. This takes 36" to 45" square fabric to make a very cool bag with a few knots.  Fabric will be available ($1.00 each) for folks to purchase and use.  Or better yet people are welcome to bring their own 36" to 46" squares of fabric. Any fabric is fine. A non-knit is better.

2.  No Sew T-Shirt bags.  T-shirts will be available for $1.00, or folks can bring their own to cut and tie. We will also have some finished bags. For those bringing their own, a large t-shirt is great and the longer the better.  Artist John McKellar has created a special block-print for the occasion that can be used to decorate t-shirts.  A sewing machine will also be set up to stitch up some of the t-shirt bags.

3.  "Imagination Station," an interactive arts booth for kids is a fun regular Second Saturday feature.  Put on by The Arts, Hancock, it's always located in front of The French Potager (213 Main Street).  This month, kids can create fun projects using plastic bottle caps and DVD/CD cases!

As usual, two designated "Hot Spot" businesses will be celebrating limelight status in April.  Both of this month's Hot Spots are vacation rentals - which allow visitors to experience Old Town like a local!  "Heart of Old Town" is located at 109 Second Street and "Life's a Beach," is located just at few blocks away at 107 Carroll Ave.  Read more about them below!

Not only is the "Heart of Old Town" vacation rental located right in the center of Old Town Bay St. Louis, but it is owned and operated by two of the true heartbeats of the Bay, Sylvia and Ed Young.

Originally from New Orleans, Ed began learning the antique business from his father, who opened his first shop in 1932. Over 45 years later, Ed and Sylvia are keeping the tradition alive with two antique businesses in Old Town Bay St. Louis — Antique Maison and the Antique Maison's Ulman Mall & Tea Room.

Many people know Mrs. Sylvia for her tuxedo, bridal and costume shop, Bon Temps Roule, which she opened as soon as she moved to Bay St. Louis in 1991.

Post-Katrina, Ed and Sylvia opened Antique Maison to help the people of the Gulf Coast replace precious heirlooms lost in the storm and they opened a vacation rental cottage next to their antique store to help welcome visitors back to the Bay.

For Nona Morlan, dreams do come true.

"I kept having a recurring dream where I was looking out a window, and I had no idea where this house was," Morlan said. "The view was beautiful, but totally unfamiliar to me."

One day as she was in her new Bay St. Louis vacation rental she looked out the window and realized this was the view and the house she had been searching for.

"It was the exact view in my dreams," Morlan said. "I knew this was where I was supposed to be."

"Life's a Beach" peach cottage overlooks the Bay Bridge at 107 Carroll Avenue near the Old Town Presbyterian Church. Whether it's a couple looking for a romantic getaway or a large family looking to have some fun in Bay St. Louis, "Life's a Beach" can accommodate 2 to 6 people.

Two houses from the beach and two blocks from Old Town Bay St. Louis, vacationers will find lots to do in walking distance of the cottage. The newly installed outdoor shower is especially convenient for those looking to soak up the sun and sand during their vacation.

Inside, the house has all the comforts of home with a full kitchen and full-sized appliances. The entire home is wheelchair friendly, even the large indoor shower. There's also Wi-Fi and lots of TV channels for those who want to relax with their favorite programs.

For those wanting to escape technology, there's plenty of opportunity for that, too. Just take your coffee on the front patio and catch a gorgeous Gulf Coast sunrise.
Morlan's favorite places to eat in Bay St. Louis? She recommends the Blind Tiger — "Try the Royal Reds!" — and Buoys for their burgers. She also likes the Purple Banana for a sweet treat or 200 North Beach if you are looking to treat yourself to a nice dinner.

"Life's a Beach" is also a perfect place to be for Cruisin' the Coast, but you have to book early. Morlan says 2016 is already booked up, but her cottage is a great place to see the cars go down the beachfront road — and she has plenty of parking to boot.
