Second Saturday Art Walk - January 2020

1/8/2020

Saturday, January 11
Picture
The competition is stiff in the Dolly Parton lookalike contest! These contestants from 2019's event show that it's all about having fun on Second Saturday. Photo by Brenda Comer.

A few times a year, the iconic Second Saturday Artwalk event in Old Town Bay St. Louis adopts a theme.  Of course, celebrating the arts!  For the past five years, Dolly Parton has been the focus during January, the month of the music star's birthday.  It's called "Dolly Should," as in Dolly-Should-Come-And-Spend-Her-Birthday-In-Bay-St.-Louis!

The day boasts a bevy of country-themed events with the grand finale being an extraordinary - and VERY competitive - Dolly look-alike contest.

Be sure to check out this month's "Hot Spot" businesses:  Bay-Tique (125 Main Street) and Gallery 220 (220 Main Street).  Read more about them below.

Inspired by the words of guests at Carroll House Bed & Breakfast, Jane Alford established Bay-Tique as a beach shop that was a cut above what you would typically find on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. She has succeeded admirably, as the store is warm, funky, fun and original – all qualities that also represent Bay St. Louis as a community and destination.

Bay-Tique’s motto is “slightly edgy, always fun,” and they live up to those words. They carry a mix of clothing and gifts by local artists and designers, as well as national brands such as Sanuk and Quay sunglasses. They are size inclusive, with a respectable selection of plus-size items and have everything needed to complete a look – handbags, jewelry, hats – you name it.

It’s never too early to start prepping for Valentine’s Day, and Bay-Tique has some great gifts. It will be here before we know it, and Bay-Tique has some beachy-sweet items guaranteed to please the ladies. If you are looking for some brownie points, pick up one of the items from the Sweet Grace fragrance line. They have candles, soaps, lotions, diffusers, car clips – everything she could imagine, and they all smell delicious.

Don’t forget about your best friend, either. That’s right – we ARE talking about the furry one with four legs. Bay-Tique has an adorable pet boutique with toys, shampoos and outfits.

Bay-Tique is open 10 am – 5 pm Monday through Saturday and 11 am – 4 pm on Sunday. Be sure to stop by on Second Saturday, Jan. 11, between 4 and 7 pm for live music and refreshments!

One of the Old Town Merchants Association’s January hot spots is one of the downtown mainstays – Gallery 220. This artists’ cooperative is located in one of the most recognizable buildings in Bay St. Louis, with its colorful vintage Coca-Cola mural facing north and its beautiful red tree mural facing south.

Picture

Gallery 220 currently features 28 artists, all of whom bring their own unique vibe and energy to the space. They have a little bit of everything, from $5-$10 jewelry pieces to priceless original masterpieces.

Visitors will find pieces from up-and-coming artists as well as local and regional favorites like Michelle Allee, Spencer Gray and Herb Willey.

Building owners Jenise McCardell and Mark Currier started the art co-op just 5 weeks after Hurricane Katrina to support displaced artists. 15 years later, the camaraderie and creative energy they cultivated continues to thrive. The couple owns Clay Creations in the space behind the gallery.

One can often find artists at work in the studio portion, making the one-of-a-kind pieces that feature the treasured places from around the area, from New Orleans and across the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

McCardell and Currier offer the artists in the gallery professional guidance, support and encouragement and have led Gallery 220 to become one of the most popular stops on Main Street.
