Over the past twenty years, the monthly artwalk has become one of the most popular events in the region.  Old Town stays lively all day, with many merchants and restaurants offering specials.  The pace picks up from 4 – 8pm, when gallery openings and live music keep the streets humming with activity.

Each month, one or two Old Town businesses take the spotlight  as “Hot Spots."  Veteran Second Saturday patrons know these will be among the liveliest places to be during the event.

Antique Maison Ulman
317 Ulman Avenue,
BSL

Picture
To celebrate their Hot Spot status, the Englishmen Band will perform at Antique Maison Ulman from 5-7:30 p.m. Complementary refreshments will be served.

Just a couple of blocks off Main Street is the second antique mall opened in Bay St. Louis by enthusiastic curiosity hunters Ed and Sylvia Young. The New Orleans natives have been in the furniture and antique business for decades. Nine years ago, they opened their first Bay St. Louis business, Antique Maison, at 111 North Second Street to help the town’s residents replace some of the many family heirlooms that were lost in Hurricane Katrina.

If you haven’t been there yet or haven’t explored it lately, this Second Saturday on November 14 from 4-8 pm is a great time to check out the Youngs’ newest antique mall, opened just last year. With live music inside, complimentary delectables from the Tea Room lunch restaurant, and freshly baked pretzel samples from master baker Pablo Paz of ASAP Soft Pretzels in New Orleans, you are invited to tea!

The large gallery space winds through attractively displayed booths of antiques, handmade furniture, home decor items, art pieces, jewelry, and nostalgia and vintage collectibles from numerous vendors and artists. A cavernous, covered Quonset hut attached to the main building is full of even more antique indoor and outdoor furniture, shabby-chic articles, and garden items.

The unique Tea Room, the first of its kind in Bay St. Louis, is located in two daintily decorated rooms in the middle of the antique mall. It serves fresh quality food and a wide variety of teas at reasonable prices. The menu features quiches, artichoke delight, scones with lemon curd, and desserts, as well as hearty lunch items such as homemade soups and gumbo, chicken or shrimp salads, and roast beef or roasted turkey sandwiches. With its lace-doily embellished tablecloths, antique dining tables and chairs, vintage china plates and glassware, and nostalgic 1940s-era music, the Tea Room takes the visitor back to earlier, more genteel times, hearkening to the days from which many of the store’s antiques originated. “High tea” three-tier Windsor-served meals are available for lunch and for private parties. Dine inside, eat outside on the elegant deck, or take food for carry-out.

Moreover, the Antique Maison Ulman hosts an exciting auction in its Quonset Hut on the first Monday of every month at 6 p.m., with previews beginning after 4 p.m. This month’s auction is on November 2, and will offer a menu of red beans and rice, hamburgers, chili dogs, and nachos with cheese.

Auctions are a great way for antiques aficionados and collectors to pick up treasured bargains, and meet other members of the community at the same time! As everything from fine antiques to fun knick-knacks will be offered up during the auction, family and friends should all be able to find something that appeals, and join in the fun of bidding. Attendance is free, and all ages are welcome (although bidders must be 18 or older).

The gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The Tea Room serves lunch Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and is also available for private parties, bridal showers, club meetings and other special events. (Call for reservations for parties of six or more.)  For more information about the auctions, or for dealer inquiries for consignment of merchandise, call Sylvia Young at (228) 344-3128, send her an email at antique.maison@att.net, or visit www.antiquemaison.com.

The Shoe Boutique
inside Maggie May’s Art and Gift Gallery
126 Main Street
BSL

Picture
The Shoe Boutique presents live music by The BSL Trio at Maggie May’s this Second Saturday, with complimentary refreshments and discounted Aerosoles.

This retail ladies’ shoes and accessories store, tucked away by the sunny front window along the long ambling hallways at Maggie May’s Art and Gift Gallery at 126 Main, may not be the largest shop in Old Town, but it just may be the best place to find the perfect ladies’ shoes in Bay St. Louis. And just in time for the festive holiday parties of the Christmas season!  After all, if your shoes are cute enough, you can conquer the world, right?

At its current Old Town Bay St. Louis location since February 2015, the store displays a large variety of styles and sizes of women’s shoes, handbags, and other accessories. One can find styles for all ages, from ballerina slippers to cowboy boots, and even glitzy metallic fleur-de-lis-embellished mules and flip-flops! Brands include Lucky Brand, Volatile, Yellow Box and Van Eli. Matching accessories like purses, hats, scarves, tote bags and beachwear are displayed with and complement the footwear.

You can never take too much care with what you put on your feet, and at the Shoe Boutique, the shoes are selected to be as comfortable as they are eye-catching. Owners Bill and Joyce Whitfield have been retailers on the Gulf Coast since 1984, when they bought a store in Gulfport. They have been selling shoes here in Bay St. Louis for over fifteen years, with previous locations at Marketown Plaza and at Hancock Square on Highway 190.

A far cry from shoe shopping in a retail mall, the Shoe Boutique offers the personal and attentive service that Bay St. Louis shoppers love. Joyce carefully selects each item she stocks with three criteria in mind: style, comfort and affordability.

Check out the Shoe Boutique this Second Saturday on November 14, 4-8 p.m.  Live music and refreshments will be provided, and the boutique will offer a 20% discount on any Aerosoles brand.

You never know, a good pair of shoes could change your life (or just your attitude) — ask Cinderella! For more information, call Joyce Whitfield at (228) 467-7750 or (228) 216-3742.

Live Music at the Mockingbird!

Picture
November's Second Saturday celebration at the Mockingbird will feature jazz by the David Knorr Trio. The fine art of Thomas Jackson, Kat Fitzpatrick, Marsha Prejean, J.J. Foley, Pamela Marshall and Robert Waldrop will also be on display throughout the Bird.

Artisanal beers, both local and regional will be on tap and make a great accompaniment for one of our world famous Mockingburgers or Veggie-Mockingburgers. The moon should be bright and the scene is hopping. Arrange to meet your friends under the stars at the Mockingbird Cafe and Gallery at 110 South Second Street, Bay St. Louis.
