New ART.BSL Podcast Focuses on Local Culture

7/1/2021

Arts Alive - July 2021
Launching in July:  a new weekly podcast focusing on the Coastal arts scene and its importance to the local economy.

Traveler Broad Instagram star Kerry Maloney is featured on the first ART/BSL podcast with host Steve Barney.
Steve Barney, founder of the Bay St. Louis Creative Arts Center and known as “the Mad Potter of Bay St. Louis,” recently launched a new weekly podcast, ART.BSL, with the tag line, “Get the Buzz.” The podcast will have its finger on the pulse of the arts and culture scene on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

How to fulfill that ambitious mission? According to Barney, ART.BSL is designed to tell the inside stories of the people behind the scenes who are making the Coast community one of the fastest growing areas in the region.

Episode One, ART.BSL

The podcast will also contain a mix of original content and syndicated content from partners, including the Shoofly Magazine. Each episode will feature in-depth interviews with creative movers and shakers and offer artist profiles and timely information on upcoming events, gallery openings and live music performances. Shoofly Magazine Events Editor, Ana Balka, will be doing a “Calendar Gal” segment, spotlighting top local happenings each week.

“We are particularly targeting the thousands of visitors and seasonal residents who are flocking to the Bay St. Louis area every weekend,” says Barney.

“We are looking forward to using this media platform to promote artists, our community and our growing creative economy. In addition, we want to educate listeners about the role artists play in the Coast’s economic development."

“The goal is to create a critical mass of content and listenership as we pursue sustainable funding opportunities,” says Barney. He believes the podcast will become a powerful tourism development vehicle.

In the premiere episode, Steve talks to Instagram stars Maloney and Fender, The Traveler Broads. They discuss a variety of topics from the cinema shooting in Aurora, Colorado, to the impact of Burningman culture. They dive into Fender's article in NOLA.com, "Behind Bay St. Louis' rise as the artsy, relaxed beach town drawing New Orleanians in droves."
