What's Up, Waveland? December 2020

12/3/2020

Update:  Unfortunately, on 12/9, Waveland canceled all the events listed here because of the COVID-19 spike.
Waveland alderman Jeremy Burke updates us on Waveland's Family Christmas Festival, the Christmas Parade, an exciting exhibit at the Ground Zero Museum, and the last Food Truck Friday of the year.

Family Christmas Festival

The Waveland Family Christmas Festival is a children-focused festival with Santa Claus, snacks, treats, face painting, games, and a cake walk. Children will be able to make their own crafts to take home with them. All are invited to attend and welcome.

If you would like to contribute to this event, we are in need of boxes of candy canes, cakes or cupcakes for the cake walk, and small bottles of water or juice boxes, In addition, if you or your business have items or coupons that you would like to contribute for the gift bags, please contact Kristen at 228-209-7399, or Jeremy at 228-493-7399.

Waveland Christmas Parade

This year’s Christmas parade will take place on Saturday, December 12, at 4:00 pm. It is not too late to sign up to participate. Golf carts, classic cars and walking groups are all invited to participate. Maybe you and your neighbors would like to don your ugly, tacky Christmas sweaters and walk in the parade to the beat of Christmas music - let us know and we will reserve your spot.

The parade will begin at the foot of Lafitte Street and Beach Boulevard, travel down Beach Boulevard to Coleman, turn up Coleman Avenue and disband at Coleman Avenue and Central Avenue.

Best decorated golf cart will be awarded.

Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Highlighting Changing Landscape of Rural America Coming to Waveland, MS

The Smithsonian's Museum on Main Street, in cooperation with Mississippi Humanities Council, presents “Crossroads: Change in Rural America.” The exhibition, examining the evolving landscape of rural America, opens at the Waveland Ground Zero Hurricane Museum on December 19, 2020 at 10 am and will run through January 29, 2021.

Waveland has been expressly chosen by the Mississippi Humanities Council to host Crossroads as part of the Museum on Main Street program – a national/state/local partnership to bring exhibitions and programs to rural cultural organizations. The exhibition is part of Museum on Main Street, a unique collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), state humanities councils across the nation, and local host institutions. The exhibition will tour six communities in Mississippi, and Waveland is the only host site on the Coast.

“Crossroads explores how rural American communities have changed in the 20th century. This national exhibit allows us to reflect on Waveland and all of Hancock County’s past, present and future, and we are excited to explore what the future may hold for our community,” said Bernie Cullen, museum board chair and project director.

The exhibition is free and open to the public. The museum follows COVID guidelines, including wearing a mask. Reservations are strongly encouraged by calling ahead with the requested day, time, and number of guests in your group.

The exhibit will run December 19, 2020 through January 29, 2021. The museum is open Tuesday -Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm and is located at 335 Coleman Avenue in Waveland, phone 228-467-9012.

This program is financially assisted by the National Endowment for the Humanities through the Mississippi Humanities Council.

This project is made possible in part by a grant from the Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area.

Waveland Food Truck Friday

The last Waveland Food Truck Friday of 2020 will be Friday, December 11, from 5:00-8:00 on Coleman Avenue.

Coleman Avenue will be closed to vehicles in front of Studio Waveland to accommodate the food trucks. The city of Waveland will take a number of safety measures to accommodate social distancing and provide a safe environment for Waveland Food Truck Friday attendees.

Waveland Food Truck Friday admission is open to the public, and admission is free. Food can be purchased through the participating food trucks. The Waveland Civic Association will have a table set up selling beer, soft drinks and water. Waveland Food Truck Friday will have Greg B. Productions playing everyone's favorite music, thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Silver Slipper Casino.

Use the hashtag #downtownwaveland on your social media post so everyone can see all the good food, good folks, and the good time you are having.
