Waveland Civic Association St Patrick’s Day Parade ​

​February was the month of the Nereids mermaids, and March is the month that the Waveland Civic Association parades on the streets of Waveland.

Organized in 1964, the Waveland Civic Association's St. Patrick's Day parade is the oldest Irish Parade on the Mississippi Coast.

Local favorites are the Krewe of Shamrockers, The Queens, and of course the Raw Oyster Marching Club!

The parade is Saturday, March 12, at 2pm, and lines up on Bienville, goes down North Beach Blvd., turns up Coleman Ave. to Central, then goes left on Central to Waveland Ave., where it will disperse at the Ellwood Bourgeois Ballpark.

I hope to see everyone lined up along the route, ready to catch beads, carrots, and, of course, cabbage!

Studio Waveland: Two great events

Studio Waveland at 228 Coleman Avenue brings world-class art and art lovers to Waveland, and Saturday, March 5 will be the last day to see their “Partners in Print: Frances Swigart and Jim Steg” exhibition, featuring etchings and relief prints by two master printers who had an astonishing artistic and life collaboration.   

As part of the exhibition, the gallery hosts a talk by Swigart focused on Steg's service in the WWII Ghost Army, a tactical deception unit composed of artists that included later luminaries like Bill Blass and Ellsworth Kelly. The unit employed costumes, decoys, phony radio transmissions, and other means of deception to outfox the enemy, and until declassification in 1996 was top secret. On February 1, President Biden signed into law the Ghost Army Congressional Gold Medal Act, the result of a years-long, bipartisan effort by lawmakers to recognize the distinguished service of members of the Ghost Army.

​Then on Friday, March 11 – which also happily happens to be Food Truck Friday on Coleman Ave. – Studio Waveland holds the opening reception for “Five,” which features five of the state's top artists in one show: JJ Foley, Kerr Grabowski, Bill Myers, Vicki Niolet, and Elizabeth Schafer. 

These five artists are known for their ground-breaking work, and there's rarely an opportunity to see a collection of their work at once. Be there! The opening reception starts at, of course, 5 pm!

Waveland’s Ground Zero Hurricane Museum exhibit

​And you'll want to drop in at Waveland’s Ground Zero Hurricane Museum, too.

Until April 1, you can see “Secret Coast: Pascagoula to Pontchartrain,” an exhibit by J. Michael Dumoulin highlighting the relaxed culture and beach setting unique to the Mississippi’s three coastal counties. This show features 15 original illustrations and quotes from Dumoulin's book, “Balanced on a Moment.”
