Waveland Elections
The Waveland election season begins soon. As a matter of fact it’s already begun, since City Hall is taking affidavit ballots now (if (1) you think you’ll be out of town on Oct 4, or (2) you’re over 65 years old).

On Tuesday, October 4, a primary will be held for the four Republican candidates for mayor and the four Republican candidates for Ward 1. Note: Since we don’t register by party in Mississippi, all Waveland voters are eligible to vote Oct 4.

Mayor
The Republican primary on Oct 4 is intended to whittle down the mayoral candidates from four to one. Then, in the general election on Dec 6, that Republican winner will face off against the Independent candidate and the Libertarian candidate.

Ward 1
The Republican primary on Oct 4 is also intended to narrow the candidates for Alderman in Ward 1 from four to one. Then, on the general election on Dec 6, that Republican will face off against the Independent candidate and the Libertarian candidate.

Ward 2
In the general election on Dec 6, Ward 2 voters will choose between Bobby Richardson and Clarence Harris.

Ward 3
Ward 3's incumbent has no challenger, so Shane Lafontaine will be the Ward 3 Alderman for four more years.

Ward 4
In the general election on Dec. 6, Republican candidate Gary Catalano will face off against Independent candidate Jeremy Clark and Libertarian candidate Lynn Smith.

Note that the Board of Alderman will look considerably different next year because two of the current aldermen (Ward 1's Jeremy Burke and Ward 4's Charles Piazza) are giving up their seats to run for mayor.

Polling for all elected municipal positions will be held in one location – the Waveland Fire Department on Coleman Avenue.

Between these two dates there is also a congressional election on Nov. 8, where polling places will be located in five sites around the city.

Around Town
The grass-cutting contract seems to be discussed at every Board of Aldermen meeting, while the county garbage collection contract seems to be discussed on every social media platform. Fuller reports will be shared as these issues are addressed.

I just want to make sure you saw this one sentence in the “Refocus Highway 90” report that we shared last month. “The site of a former shopping center at Waveland Avenue and Hwy 90, owned by Mr. Robert Bruno, has been cleared for development by the EPA.”

The demolition of the old hotel on 603 and 90 has been delayed because needed equipment is delayed at another project the contractor is working. Progress should resume soon.

The Sea Coast Echo reported on September 14 that the Waveland Pier has FINALLY gotten the green light for repairs. We’ll keep you informed on construction progress.

From Our Community Calendar
Hold onto your hats! There are so many events this fall season in Waveland, it’ll be hard to keep track.

Remember, you’ll find them all on the Shoofly Magazine’s Community Calendar (think of it as the kitchen sink of local events) and our page of curated “Don’t Miss” happenings – Upcoming Events. We update both every week!

Below, we’ve listed some Waveland-specific events you’ll want to check out:
  • Saturday, October 1: National Night Out. Come to St Clare Catholic Church between 9 am and 1 pm to meet our Hancock County and Waveland Police Officers. Cool emergency vehicles, info on the Neighborhood Watch program, and free food!

Coleman Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic in front of Studio Waveland to accommodate the food trucks and allow you to set up a canopy tent, table, and chairs if you choose. Of course, you’ll find more information on our Shoofly Magazine Community Calendar.

  • Saturday, October 15: The inaugural Coleman Avenue Fall Fest event will feature artists, food, music and much more, providing the Waveland community with a fun, safe, family event. We’ll be posting more details on our Shoofly Magazine Community Calendar as they become available.
