October 30, 2024
The continuing beautiful weather and light winds means great boating conditions. The fishing continues to delight, with all local species well represented  - and huge sheepshead are making a showing.

We are coming off arguably one of the prettiest weeks of weather we have had in months, with mild temperatures, clean water, high salinity, and great fishing. This time of year is something you have to experience to understand how amazing it is.

With the light winds and calm seas, our boats have been able to run anywhere and everywhere. The fronts are surely coming down, but for the time being, the speckled trout, white trout, flounder, redfish, black drum, and some monster sheepshead have been keeping us very busy.

Since the weather is so pretty, a lot of our boats have been running far south to explore the Louisiana marsh. The speckled trout and white trout fishing has been very steady over the oyster reefs throughout the marsh. The fish are moving, so it is usually a five-minute stop until you find the schools.

We are still bringing lots of live shrimp, but when things kick into high gear, we switch over to soft plastics. All of our boats seem to throw a different make and model of soft plastics. The point is that it’s not what you are throwing at the fish; it’s where you're throwing it.

The surprise visitors last week were the gigantic sheepshead over some of these reefs. Some of these fish were massive. We used live shrimp 2 to 3 feet under a Boat Monkey popping cork over the oysters, and it was very effective. The schools that had small trout and white trout always seemed to have a few bull reds lurking amongst them. It’s a lot of fun fighting those huge fish, but they wreak havoc on the trout fishing.

The white trout seem to be everywhere right now. Anglers are catching them in the bay, around the barrier islands, and throughout the Louisiana Marsh. Some of the white trout are 15 inches!

Enjoy it while you can and watch for the cold fronts. Have fun and be safe.
