While strong winds may keep our boats close to home, it also keeps them close to some great fishing action.

With last week’s rain and wind, our boats kept to nearshore trips. This was not a bad thing at all, as the fishing has been incredible close to home. The bay, the bridges, the nearshore reefs, and the rivers have been fantastic. It has been a mixed bag of awesomeness.

Luckily, the majority of the winds have been out of the north, allowing us to fish from Pass Christian all the way down to the Pearl River. We have been seeing a good many redfish, black drum, sheepshead, white trout, and many more species. We have also seen big bull reds and black drum mixed in for some brutal fights on light tackle. There has also been a decent amount of flounder still hanging around, and some of these fish are true doormats.

When the wind does blow this time of year, most times, it is north or west winds. That direction gives us a lot of protection nearshore just off Hancock County. That coupled with the pretty green salt water we have been enjoying has made for some fantastic fishing. The bait shops have been full with live shrimp and minnows, which only adds to the unbelievable opportunities for incredible fall fishing.

As with any fishing, the big swings in the tides and in the presence of baitfish and shrimp make for a very good day. When the wind and seas calm down we may venture south to the Louisiana marsh, but seeing the action we’ve been enjoying close to home, it may be a safe bet to just fish here in the front yard.
