Whether by sea or even by land, sometimes you have to go the distance to get to the best fishing.

I’m really hoping we don’t jinx it, but the winter has been on the milder side these last couple of weeks. We are still fighting the lower salinity on the west side, but on calmer days, our boats are running far to find cleaner, saltier water.

A couple of the long runs have even found some really nice speckled trout. Live shrimp has been tougher to get, but we are putting some miles on the trucks to get them whenever and wherever we can.

The sheepshead are still the safe bet to combat the north winds. The Bay is much more protected and should get better and better in the coming weeks.

Assuming the really cold temps don’t hit us too hard, the redfish should stay in the ponds and feeding for a while. It’s all about the cold fronts. You don’t want to be anywhere near those nasty things when they hit. Pay very close attention to the weather forecasts, and don’t try and cut it too close.

Also, the lines at the repair shops have been short. If you need work done on your boat, motor, trailer, etc. this is the best time of the year.

As always, have fun and be safe.
