Tasty sheepshead and speckled trout are there for the taking – but beware the fog that can be dangerous to boaters.

The extended forecast is looking good. This time of year, if we are getting two or three days of good weather per week, it’s a win.
 
The big hurdle is going to be fog if these mild temperatures stick around. Please be careful in the fog.

If you don’t use radar, I would recommend that you don’t leave safe harbor. It’s even more important than ever to make sure your navigation lights, VHF, GPS and safety gear are all in good working order.
 ​

Sheepshead fishing in Bay St. Louis should good all month long.

We may get a run on the speckled trout if this warm stuff sticks around. We try not to get too excited, because February usually has some serious fronts coming. We will definitely be working on the reds. They’ve gotten back into the ponds and should keep feeding in the warmer water. On the day(s) before the hard fronts, they should be eating everything in sight.
 

 
The low-hanging fruit is definitely going to be the Sheepshead. They should be piling in all month. Live shrimp has been a little tough to get but well worth the drive to get them. Bring small hooks and plenty of extra tackle. Some of these sheepshead fish get big and are experts at running back into structure.

A friend of mine bleeds his sheepshead. I’m here to tell you, it’s a game-changer. You make a small cut near the gills as you put them in the ice chest or fish box. It’s easy to see that the fillets are noticeably whiter. There is very little to trim out, and very little goes to waste.
