The great weather is contributing to a banner season for all the saltwater species we see this time of year. Availability of fresh bait is the only obstacle right now.

It seems the sheepshead have begun heading south. We are still catching a few in the Bay and on the nearshore reefs, but the bigger ones and the big numbers have been further south. The redfishing has been the most consistent bite, especially with these higher tides. I’m happy to report we are catching well to the west in Lake Borgne, in the Bay, and of course, down south in the Louisiana marsh. Live or dead shrimp 18 inches under a Boat Monkey popping cork right against the grass has been our go-to move. For the next few weeks, the puppy drum (small black drum) should be very steady, especially along the nearshore reefs and bridges. I am a big fan of black drum; the small ones are delicious, and the large ones fight harder than just about anything you’ll find nearshore. Please remember that there is no bag or size limit for black drum in Mississippi. However, our neighbors to the south in Louisiana have a five fish-per-person limit with a 16-inch minimum size. Our boats have started to catch some nice speckled trout. That’s always good news. The bad news is that the bite has been inconsistent. You smash them one day and come back to the exact same spot and not get a bite the next. I assure you, if the conditions stay the same and we get minimal rain, we may be in for some of the best trout fishing we have seen in many years. Fingers are crossed.
