Anglers are getting out as far as the weather allows, and there are winter and spring species around. Spring is almost here, and hot spring action is a mere weeks away!

We are enjoying our first big wave of spring breakers down here on the wonderful Mississippi Gulf Coast. We have had some cooler mornings since the time change, so we are leaving a little after sunrise to wait for those warmer temperatures.

The winds have kept the majority of our trips in close fishing, the nearshore reefs and shorelines from Ansley to Pass Christian. It is a very mixed bag but a lot of fun. Some days we are seeing a lot of puppy drum and freshwater catfish; other days we are picking through redfish to find keeper-sized fish.

If you land on some clean water, the sheepshead are still around for the time being. On the few pretty days we’ve had lately, the boats heading down to the Louisiana marsh have started to see a few speckled trout here and there. They are also encountering bull reds mixed in with them.

So far so good on the rains. They are definitely to be expected, but the river stages appear to be good for now. Everything seems to be on track for a very nice spring. Bring on the warm temperatures and the big spring bite!
