Fluctuating temperatures have interrupted the great late winter fishery, but things will bounce back quickly - and spring is just around the corner. - by Sonny Schindler, Shore Thing Fishing Charters This time of year, the temperature is not as much of an issue as the rain. Even though we are getting rain, we are not being punished by them, which will pay off in the coming weeks and months. For now, it is business as usual. We are having a ball chasing redfish on the nearshore reefs and shoreline throughout the marsh. The fish we catch are full of minnows and crabs and are feeding aggressively. There are huge numbers of smaller 16- to 17-inch redfish everywhere we are fishing. This is a big deal. These fish will remain in the same areas for the next year or so, and next year we will be covered up in slot fish. It’s March, so we are not hammering on any big numbers of speckled trout yet. I imagine that as the water temperature gets closer to that 70-72 degree mark, the speckled trout fishing will be stellar. The black drum are still plentiful throughout the bay and on the nearshore reefs. Little ones get eaten, and the big ones are just a fun fight and make for a great photo.
