We are enjoying catching lots of speckled trout and flounder, and the giant redfish are just around the bend! - by Sonny Schindler, Shore Thing Fishing Charters
We are enjoying a good bite on the speckled trout in every direction. Our boats have been catching on the nearshore reefs, inside of the Bay of St. Louis, around the barrier islands, and of course, throughout the Louisiana marsh. Not only are the fish seemingly everywhere, but we are also catching them in very different scenarios. We are landing nice-sized speckled trout near the banks in shallow water and good numbers on deeper reefs in as much as 10 to 12 feet of water. There are plenty of undersized trout mixed in, but that is very encouraging. Most of these smaller fish are still big enough to spawn, and that is a great sign for good things to come. Several of our boats have begun seeing bull reds further to the south. That should only get better, especially when the pogies start moving further north. Those drag-screaming bull reds will be right behind the pogie schools when that happens. We have not seen much in the way of tripletail the past several days, but much of that is because we have been fishing in choppy water, making the fish tough to see. We are most excited about the flounder. We typically don’t see the quantity and quality of these delicious flatties at this time of year but I’m very happy to report that our boats have been catching beautiful flounder fishing against the grass near small drains and ditches, typically on a falling tide. Hopefully they will be around for several more months. You can plan for lines at the bait shop and boat launch as well as crowds at the fishing grounds. Please be courteous to other anglers and boaters. Even better, if you see a crowd of boats, go exploring for new areas. I assure you, the fishing has been fantastic, and avoiding the crowds will result in a much more relaxing day. Enjoy this feature?Comments are closed.
