Shrimp are back, and speckled trout are just waiting for you to share some! Trout have returned to our local waters, ready to add some excitement to your fishing.

We hope everyone had a very safe and happy Mother’s Day. The fishing has gotten very good in the past week or so. The big push of shrimp we have been waiting for has come through, and with it, big numbers of speckled trout.

We did have a good bit of wind to deal with, but even in windy conditions when we were able to hide, the fish were still there.

It seemed like things kicked off almost overnight. The speckled trout showed up in the bay, on the nearshore reefs, at the Islands, and definitely in the Louisiana marsh. The easiest way to find them is to follow the diving birds. Some of the flocks had catfish under them, some had smaller, undersized trout, and some of them had those big pretty ones we are all after.

On a few of the calm days, when the water was moving well, we were able to locate some very large speckled trout. Shrimp and croakers fished slowly on the bottom seemed to be the best ticket. It seemed like the boats that were setting up quietly and not making a lot of racket stayed on the bite.

On the days the wind was blowing, the back bay was still good for puppy drum, sheepshead, and flounder, with a few redfish and speckled trout mixed in. The number of boaters has definitely increased with the improved fishing and weather. Please be courteous to others on the water. There are more than enough areas for all of us to fish. Thank you.
