After a long wait, bait shrimp are finally frequenting local waters. Can summer's great fishing be far behind?
- by Sonny Schindler, Shore Thing Fishing Charters
Bait shrimp are pushing in, and we’re seeing the most yet this year. On days we were able to get farther south, we saw huge flocks of birds with big jumping shrimp at the water's surface. Underneath them were speckled trout, white trout, ladyfish, and of course, catfish. The shorelines in and around the Bay of St. Louis are still holding a decent amount of flounder. We haven’t seen any doormats, but there are many smaller, legal sized fish to be caught. The speckled trout fishing has been consistent enough so that most of our guys have not spent much time fishing for reds. They also don’t enjoy spending time with the biting flies around the grassy marsh areas. Unfortunately, it looks like we are going to have a bad year with those annoying pests. For now, we are just taking advantage of the calm seas when we get them. The fishing is very good right now, and it should only get better. We are very much looking forward to the clean water pushing further into the Lake Borgne area, and with that should come even more speckled trout, redfish, and tripletail. Memorial Day was the official kickoff of the wild summer season. There are plenty of places to go and more than enough fish out there for all of us. Please be courteous and respectful of other anglers and boaters. Have fun and be safe. Enjoy this feature?Comments are closed.
