Shore Thing Fishing Report

Shore Thing Fishing Report, 5/31/2023

5/31/2023

May 31, 2023
Improved water salinity means trout, trout, trout! Speckled trout are everywhere - but other species are out there, too. It's like a fishing smorgasbord!

We hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend, I know we did!

The speckled trout bite we are seeing is one of the best in many years. This is the type of fishing we used to see before the spillways were opened. The good news is that we are catching them everywhere.

There has been consistent fishing with fish in the bay, on the nearshore reefs, at the barrier islands, near Lake Borgne, and of course, in the Louisiana marsh. Mixed in with the speckle trout have been large white trout, always a nice sight.

The majority of our time is spent fishing structure with either shells, grass, or reefs. The peak tide swings always seem to have the best bites. We are bringing along plenty of live bait, but when the bite turns on and we get hits every cast we switch over to soft plastics, either tight lined or two feet under a Boat Monkey float.

Since the water is much saltier than we have seen in recent years, the tripletail have made a good push all through the Mississippi Sound. Our boats are seeing these fish in open water almost every day now. The majority of the tripletail we are seeing are on the smaller side, but bigger ones should be on their way, and these fish grow like weeds. It should be even better as the summer goes on.

Between the amazing speckled trout and tripletail fishing, the bull reds, jack crevalle, and sharks have been the big fish to catch. Find a big raft of pogies, or ladyfish, and they will be nearby.

Please be kind and respectful to other boaters and fisherman. It is shaping up to be an unbelievable summer, so please be courteous and have a great time while on the water. Thank you.
