Fishermen have the opportunity to catch many different species of fish off our shores right now, and as bait arrives with warmer water, it will only get better.

The barrier islands and the marshes in Louisiana have been cleaning up nicely with these higher tides. I saw the first few signs of jumping shrimp and diving birds last week; that typically means a big wave of bait, and speckled trout should be headed our way in the very near future. Captain Darien’s daughter caught the first tripletail that any of our guides have seen so far this year. I would expect that we will see several more this month. There is an unusually large number of huge logs and trees floating around in the sound. Please be careful, but check these obstructions for delicious tripletail hiding underneath. The near-shore fishing is still very consistent. We are seeing a good many legal-sized speckled trout on the nearshore reefs, and the redfish and puppy drum have been steady as well. Live shrimp is always nice to have, but with this murky water, fresh, dead shrimp can be just as effective. School will be out for summer here in the next few weeks. With those kiddos on the loose for summer, there will be big crowds at the boat launches, bait shops, and definitely on the water. There are plenty of places to fish and definitely plenty of fish out there for all of us. Please be courteous to other anglers and don’t be afraid to avoid the crowds and explore new areas.
