Summer fishing is ramping up, with larger fish moving in for anglers who get out their early - or late. And the party's just getting started.

We are pretty much in the summertime pattern. This typically means a good bite early in the morning, midday scattered showers, and a good evening bite. We are talking about South Mississippi here, so there are no guarantees on any of this.

Snapper season is wide open and big fish, like this one from last week, are being caught regularly south of the barrier islands.

The fishing continues to be very good. Our trips to the western side of the Mississippi Sound in Lake Borgne are getting better and better, and as of a few days ago, the water is still murky on that side of the state. Despite the less-than-perfect conditions to the west , we still see a decent amount of trout and redfish. I can only imagine that fishing is going to be incredible when that area gets a good blast of salty water.

Dr. Don Gaddy from Long Beach caught this big speckled trout while on the phone, south of Pass Christian.

For now, we are still doing well around the barrier islands and throughout the eastern side of the Biloxi Marsh in Louisiana waters. The nearshore reefs are still a safe bet for speckled trout, puppy drum, and redfish, and we are still catching a few lingering small sheepshead.

Our offshore boat is doing very well on red snapper and cobia. It’s a matter of taking advantage of those good weather days and bringing plenty of big, live bait. Some of these fish are true giants.

We are seeing a good number of tripletail throughout the Mississippi and Chandeleur Sounds. None of our boats have seen any giants, but they are encountering smaller, legal-size fish.

Rafts of mullet and pogies are being seen here and there along with a few scattered schools of ladyfish. This is an indicator that the big fish are moving in. The big bull reds, sharks, and Jack Crevalles should be throughout our area, even right off the beaches in Hancock and Harrison Counties. For the next few months, I will be bringing larger 60- to 80-class spinning reels to do battle with these bigger fish. Really nothing to it. Look for big schools of bait, especially if you see feeding fish. Cast anything big amongst them. This can be a white trout, a mullet, a big croaker, even a big top-water popper. You can do this on light tackle; just be prepared for a long fight.

Bring plenty of water, and definitely keep an eye on the radar. Have fun and be safe.
