As water conditions continue to improve and baitfish spawn, fishing continues to impress. Will this be the season that fishermen talk about for years?

To add to the good news, this great fishing is throughout the Mississippi Sound, the barrier islands, and especially the Louisiana marsh. Local bait dealers are working night and day to keep the boats supplied with shrimp, croakers, and minnows. We have done well on artificial baits when the speckled trout get into a feeding frenzy, but it is very hard to be a fresh frisky live bait this time of year. Our federally permitted snapper boat began heading offshore on June 1, and they are doing well with both red snapper and a few late-season cobia, focusing on live bottoms and big live bait to specifically target larger fish. I’m happy to report that we saw a few tripletail over the past few days. We did not see many in the spring, so hopefully this is a sign of things to come. The first few fish we see are usually on the smaller side, but several of these fish were over the 18-inch minimum legal length. I’m not going to lie; crowds have been very large. One thing our boats do is look for the crowds, then try to get as far away from them as possible. Very seldom will there be a good bite with dozens of boats fishing in the same area. Please be courteous to others, and especially this time of year, do not be afraid to explore. It looks like we are in for several weeks, if not months, of great fishing, so please enjoy it.
