A break from last week's oppressive heat brought out more anglers, and the fish were waiting for them!

The temperature has come down a little bit, and it is a very welcome relief. I’m not saying it has gotten cooler, but it is not quite as miserable as the heat wave we had last week.

Our boats have been scattered east, west, north, and south, and I’m very happy to report that everyone is still catching fish in every direction. We have had good reports from Bay St. Louis, the nearshore reefs, the Lake Borgne area, the barrier islands, and the Louisiana marsh. In between each of those spots, we have been seeing tripletail almost daily.

The speckled trout bites have been at their best in the wee hours of the morning, just as the sun is rising. When the trout bite tapers off, a lot of our boats go looking for the “big fish.” I am a huge fan of going to look for the bull reds, Jack Crevalle, and sharks. I’m also happy to report that the big fish are in good numbers and size, and they are very willing to take a bait.

A very happy young man with a massive bull red he caught in the Louisiana Marsh with Capt. Eddie Peterson of Grand Pass Outfitters.

We have been looking for either large schools of baitfish (pogies, mullet, and rain minnows), ladyfish, or just fishing deep channels. The perfect scenario is finding the baitfish in and around the deeper holes in the Mississippi Sound. When that combination comes together, it seems to be an almost guaranteed bite.

A big smile and a big trout for this young man. Caught south of Bay St Louis.

These summertime squalls have been no joke. We do everything we can to keep an eye on the weather, and we always try to leave ourselves a safe exit with plenty of time to get out of harm’s way. The crowds seem to have thinned out a little after the Fourth of July. With schools starting in the next few weeks, do not miss the opportunity to get the kiddos out there, along with friends and other family.
