There is a lot of variety this week, from big sharks, to bull reds, to red snapper, and even tripletail. Sonny gives us tips on how to be a little sneaky to increase the catch.

We finally started fishing towards Lake Borgne the last couple of days. I’m happy to report that the water looks very good and had plenty of fish in it. We were able to find some good redfish and speckled trout along with some puppy drum and late-season sheepshead. All fish were caught from nearshore reefs with live or freshly dead shrimp. There are tons of small pinfish and catfish on the structures, so you will have to pick through some trash to get to the treasures. On fair weather days, the barrier islands and the Louisiana marsh have been very consistent for speckled trout, bull reds, Jack Crevalles, and sharks. A few of our boats even saw a school of tarpon and hooked a few big ones but unfortunately did not land any. It’s still the same old, same old when targeting speckled trout: Find the bait, find the fish. Luckily, the shrimp, rain minnows, mullet, and pogies have been stacked up on the shell bottoms and grass beds. Try your best to avoid the crowds and use a stealthy approach when getting close to where you want to fish. This means shutting off the big motor, trying not to slam lids, and not stomping around your boat. If a big fish comes in, try to keep it under control, and don’t make any more noise than necessary. In honor of Shark Week, I’m happy to report that we are seeing sharks near shore throughout the Louisiana marsh and especially around the barrier islands. Some of these toothy critters, mostly bull and black-tipped sharks, have been rather large. If you have kiddos that want to tangle with “Jaws,” the next couple of weeks are the best time of year to get that done. We usually throw out a big chunk of lady fish, mullet, or white trout. Get them near feeding ladyfish or in the deep channels and wait for the fun to come to you. Federal snapper season is still going strong, and on the decent weather days, our big boat is coming in with some large red snappers. Our guy is still doing the big bait, big fish approach and doing very well with it. We are still catching tripletails here and there. We caught one right off the beach this past week. Some of our guides have seen some true giants, and hopefully they will be here for the next several weeks. Just remember: Keep a close eye on the weather, be safe, and have fun.
