We traded intense heat for strong winds this week, but that hasn't stopped area fishermen from plucking seasonal specialties from the sea!

Two giant red snappers caught last week, during the last days of the federal snapper season with Captain Alex McIngvale.

The north wind has made things a little rougher for boating, though. We have had to adjust our longer runs to the south for the protected waters near land, for safety and comfort. Luckily, the fish have been enjoying “fake fall” as well. We are enjoying a mixed bag of speckled trout, puppy, drum, sheepshead, and flounder, with a few other tasty treats mixed in.

On days we can get a little further south, the big fish have not disappointed. Big schools of bull reds have been found around the barrier islands and throughout the Louisiana marsh. Some of the sharks we’re seeing are big, and some are very, VERY big. Of course, Jack Crevalles have also been great on light tackle.

By the time you read this, federal snapper season will be closed (Aug 27). It will be up to the state to determine if they open their waters for a second season this fall. Only time will tell, but we have our fingers crossed. The fall snapper season is always a lot of fun, with cooler temperatures and less boat traffic. Enjoy this feature?
