The heat wave continues to be a factor on the water, but the fish are still biting for hardy anglers who get an early start.

Gigantic bull red for this lucky young lady, fishing out of Pass Christian.
Temperatures have been the big factor these last few days. We’re experiencing some of the warmest temperatures we have seen in some time. You have to plan your entire day around fishing in the heat.

With that said, there is a bit of a lull with our speckled trout, so we just switched gears for other fish. Whatever the conditions allow is basically what we have been doing.

On calmer days the big fish have been a lot of fun. Bull reds, Jack Crevalle, black drum, and sharks have kept a lot of our anglers busy.

These big critters have been literally everywhere. We have had charters catching them in the bay, around Cat Island, and throughout the Louisiana marsh. Deep water and schools of baitfish have been the ticket. If you can find both in the same area, it is almost a guarantee.

Of course, on very hot and very calm days, looking for tripletail is about the only way to combat the heat. Riding around checking anything and everything on the surface makes the hundred-degree temperatures almost bearable. Since we have had warm, salty water, pouring in all summer, the fast-growing tripletail are getting bigger and bigger. Typically, anglers score the largest fish in the next several weeks, before the cold fronts eventually come.

Don’t give up on speckled trout. There are still plenty to be caught. The wee hours before sunrise have been the best for bites, when we can locate a good bite. We have seen a decent amount of white shrimp the last few days. When you are lucky enough to land on a big school of jumping, jumbo white shrimp, the trout bite is absolutely stellar.

This heat is no joke. You need to be extra careful getting out in this weather. Bring plenty of water and sports drinks. Some snacks help, shade is always a good thing, and if you start to get to feeling funny, it’s time to head home. As always, have fun and be safe.
