When seas are choppy, we implement Plan B, stay close to shore, and find great fishing - naturally!
- by Sonny Schindler, Shore Thing Fishing Charters
We have higher winds coming this week, so the bulk of our efforts will probably be near shore in protected waters. This is not a bad thing. The few nearshore trips we have run in the Bay of St. Louis and on the nearshore reefs have been fantastic. Since we can get live and freshly dead shrimp, we have had good success with puppy drum, redfish, sheepshead, and a few random flounder, speckled trout, and white trout. We’ve seen some tripletails over the past few days, and there were some nice ones that came in during the Hook ‘Em for Heroes tournament. You just have to put in the time, and don’t be afraid to burn some fuel. Any buoy, piling, pole, or floating pile of debris could hold a big tripletail. In almost all cases, the tripletail have been tempted by a frisky live shrimp or mullet. Since the pogies are still around for now, we are still catching big jacks and bullreds off the beaches and around the barrier islands. This should continue a while longer until the water temperatures dip. We are also coming off a full moon, so I would expect another good bite through this week and next. Enjoy the cooler temperatures, have fun, and be safe. Enjoy this feature?Comments are closed.
