As water temperatures warm, we should start to see the long-awaited return of speckled trout to our waters.
- by Sonny Schindler, Shore Thing Fishing Charters
On most of our trips we are still fishing close to home, targeting black drum, sheepshead, and redfish. The nearshore, reefs, and structures like the old piers have been our main focus. We had a couple of boats sneak over to the Louisiana marsh on calmer days, and both did see a few trout. Neither boat caught huge numbers, but it is always a nice treat to see those first few schools show up. The live bait has been very hard to come by, so some of our boats are relying on dead bait or even fiddler crabs for the sheepshead. The bait and the fishing should get better and easier in the coming weeks, when we get away from the cooler weather. Our game plan is still watching the winds and trying to get out during the best possible weather. If you can combine that with a moving tide, your odds of a good catch are much better.
