There is less boat traffic now as school starts, which means less competition for the big fish just offshore, waiting for the few hardy anglers who can beat the summer heat. - by Sonny Schindler, Shore Thing Fishing Charters
We are still getting out as early as possible and are still catching speckled trout, but sizes have been smaller, so we are not chasing them all day. The big white trout have moved into the deeper passes, and that is a welcome treat. Some of these white trout are up to 14 and 15 inches! The bull reds, Jack Crevalles, and sharks have taken over somewhat. Giant rafts of pogies and mullet will likely keep these big fish around. Find the bait and find the fish is really all we have been doing. We still have not seen big numbers of tripletail on the western side of the Mississippi Gulf coast, but we hear our friends to the east have had a good year on them. We still have several weeks left before temperatures drop and the tripletails head south. Federal snapper season is open until August 27 in Mississippi. If you are able to get on a charter boat with a federal reef permit, you can still fish for them out of Mississippi. Louisiana‘s snapper season is only open on the weekends, and you can only leave and return from a Louisiana port if you wish to fish in our neighboring state’s waters. Enjoy this feature?
