Nereids Marches on February 8th!
Mark your calendars for the Annual Nereids Parade on February 8th, 2015 at 1:00 PM.Check the Echo for the route. It will run west down Hwy. 90 from Bay St. Louis through Waveland.
New Mayor and Aldermen Settle In
Well, the holidays are over and the New Year has begun. This will be an interesting year for me.For the first time in 8 years, I have no City
Meetings, Solid Waste meetings, or Utility Authority meetingsto attend.I think that the City of Waveland will do fine with our new Board of
Mayor and Aldermen.Mike Smith is
enjoying (so far) his role as Mayor and Jeremy Burke who has taken over Ward 1
(my old job) is doing a great job as well as newcomer, Bobby Richardson in Ward
2, Shane Lafontaine returning representing Ward 3 and Charlie Piazza as third
term Alderman for Ward 4.Charlie has
served every other term and was defeated in 2002 by a coin toss after a dead
heat in the election. This election was
again a tie and this time Charlie won by drawing straws.I think it’s one for Ripley’s Believe it or
Waveland’s Ground Zero Hurricane Museum continues to amaze
me with so many visitors from out of state. Our merry band of volunteers are enjoying giving tours and hosting
groups. We are still open on Tuesdays,
Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm.
We may be able to open more if we get additional volunteer tour guides.
– Interested???It’s a great way to give
back to the community and to meet so many great people. If you would like to volunteer, call me – 228
After a beautiful fall, the weather has turned to somewhat
less than perfect. Our visitors to the
Museum from the North still think the weather is grand compared to what they
left – snow and ice!! It’s all a matter of perspective.I think we are enjoying all our visitors as
much as they enjoy our area.
Jeff Davis Street Repairs
For those who travel (or try to) Jeff Davis Avenue, the
recent rains have turned the dusty street into a slimy washboard.Don’t use Jeff Davis unless you have to. –
Unfortunately – I have to.Although we
were told that the street would be paved by Christmas, that didn’t happen.Hopefully it will be completed by the end of
January. At that time we will agree that
it was worth the inconvenience but right now it’s a Royal Pain.
Waveland Movie Theatre Slated to Open
Talked to Mayor Smith about the movie theatre that we are
eagerly awaiting. He told me that the
renovations are about 75% complete.From
what I understand, the new owners are paying for renovations as they proceed so
they will carry no debt.I guess that’s
why it’s taking a long time.I’m hoping
that it will be complete in a couple of months.Remember the days when the theatre was up and running. We really enjoyed having it there and look
forward to having a convenient spot to go to the movies.
Pier Repair and Beach Volleyball
I’m told that the contractor’s for the pier are mobilizing
the barge to begin work on the Garfield Ladner Pier. We’ll all be glad to see something going on
down there. The contract is for 120 days
and the clock is already running.I
expect to be able to use the pier by spring.
We are gearing up for Beach Volleyball Tournaments in the
spring.With our lighted courts in
place, all we need are some nice bathrooms.I’m told that the Board of Mayor and Aldermen are discussing it.
Your Waveland Cleaver Correspondent - LiLi Stahler Murphy
For those who don’t know me, I completed my second term on Waveland’s Board as Alderman of Ward 1 in December, 2014. Since I was elected in 2006, I have been writing a monthly newsletter for my constituents and other interested residents, trying to keep them up to date on Waveland “happenings." With this column - even though I chose not to seek re-election - I can continue letting people know – “What’s Up in Waveland”
