Just plan right now on spending the whole day in Old Town April 11th!  Enjoy BBQ and music for lunch at the Stella Blues and BBQ festival (in the Depot District!), then laze on the beach afterward.  Shop and check out Artwalk openings in the afternoon.  Finish out the evening with dinner in one of our restaurants, then dancing under the stars to Rockin' Dopsie back at the festival!  How's that for an agenda?

The Second Saturday Art Walk celebration on April 11, the year’s first in the springtime, is perfect for taking advantage of the season. 

Merchants will have their doors wide open as usual, ready to welcome people strolling the streets of Old Town, enjoying the seasonal weather and the live music while being part of the festivities.

Both of April’s Second Saturday Hot Spots - Carroll House Bed & Breakfast and the Hancock County Historical Society home - are known far and wide for their warm hospitality as well as their charming history.

Carroll House Bed & Breakfast, built around 1890, has been called one of the most charming spots on the Coast. Owner Jane Alford says the B&B offers elegance in a comfortable setting that feels like home.

In 2011, it opened its doors to the first guests and has since built a regular and loyal clientele thanks to Alford’s creativity and personal attention. 

In fact, the B&B’s high number of top ratings on Trip Advisor is something any business would envy.  For the second year in a row, Carroll House has received a coveted Certificate of Excellence from Trip Advisor in 2014.  The award is based on the number of four and five star reviews from guests. 

Located at 304 Carroll Ave. in a quiet residential neighborhood and convenient to Old Town and the Bay St. Louis beachfront, the Carroll House hosts guests in three bedrooms, each with a private bath. There's also a separate cottage available on the property. 

The Master Suite, the Sunshine and Sunset rooms and the adjacent Cottage feature antique furnishings and welcoming touches. Although the building is historic, the B&B has satellite television and Internet services for guests who rely on high-tech services.

The screened back porch is a favorite with all the guests – most can be found sipping wine and conversing with fellow lodgers in the evenings.

A stay at Carroll House includes a gourmet breakfast, which is prepared with vegetables and herbs grown in the B&B’s garden and local dairy, eggs and fruits.  The enormous open kitchen allows guests to visit with Alford while she’s cooking breakfast.

 Historian Charles Gray, who first turned to the Historical Society in 1985 to find out more about his newly purchased historic home, has worked tirelessly with other members to turn the society into a thriving organization.

Together, the group transformed an old, empty cottage at 108 Cue Street into a vibrant headquarters for history lovers, serious researchers and visitors.

The Kate Lobrano House, an 1896 shotgun cottage in the shadow of the historic courthouse, didn’t have water or electrical service when it was donated to the Historical Society by the family of Katherine Maynard Lobrano, but members worked hard to expand and renovate their new home.

Most of the original house is used as a museum, and a 1,400-square-foot addition to the rear of the building created office and storage space for research, lecture, and social functions including the society’s monthly luncheon meetings.

The building houses an enormous collection of historic photos and documents to help piece together the rich story of Hancock County and its residents. Many of the photos came from New Orleanians who had summer homes in the county.  There’s an impressive collection on display on the cottage walls.

And for all of the group’s passion for history, the Historical Society has made sure to take full advantage of modern technology. Thousands of the society’s records, photos and books have been digitized and made available for online research.

In fact, genealogists and historians now recognize the Hancock County Historical Society as having one of the most extensive on-line collections of local historical information in the country.  The society serves as steward to 90,000 records of births, deaths and marriages, thousands of photographs and more than 800 books of research.  It maintains a growing on-line list of 25,000 local graves – with the directions to find each one.

The society’s newsletter, edited by Eddie Coleman (Good Neighbor, February 2013), presents new research on a regular basis.  Two volunteers work full-time scanning documents and photographs.  Since that digital information is being stored on a “cloud” it’s not vulnerable to time or disaster.

Today, Charles Gray serves as Executive Director, presiding over nearly a thousand members.  The office/library at the Lobrano House is open five days a week from 10am – 3pm (closed for lunch  12 – 1pm).
