Bay St. Louis is a community that truly values the arts, including music. On Friday, March 20, four songwriters will take the stage at The Bay St Louis Little Theatre to help mark Mississippi Musicians Month with a special songwriter showcase.

Presented by Good Earth Records, the concert brings together four Mississippi songwriters for an intimate “in-the-round” performance: 
Drew Young, Cary Hudson, Shelby Kemp, and Will Coppage.
 
Mississippi Musicians Month is a statewide celebration honoring the artists and traditions that have shaped the soundtrack of America.
 

 
Throughout March, communities across Mississippi gather to recognize a legacy rooted in Delta blues, country storytelling, roots music, and the enduring craft of songwriting.
 

 
“When you put four writers in a room with nothing but guitars and stories, the walls start to lean in,” said producer Drew Young. “There are laughs. There are moments that hit you in the chest. HOMEGROWN, Coastal Mississippi’s premiere literary arts event, will return for its fourth year and is expanding to four days, boasting more than 30 acclaimed authors and an expanded format that includes some exciting surprises.

​HOMEGROWN will kick-off the event with an exclusive appearance of Oxford-based Thacker Mountain Radio Hour at the historic 100 Men Hall. This FREE event, courtesy of the Hancock County Library System (HCLS), features Thacker Mountain host Jim Dees, Paul Tate and The Yalobushwackers Band, blues musician Corky Siegel, author Ralph Eubanks, and gospel singers The Veal Brothers. Space is limited, but you can RSVP HERE to reserve your place.

On Friday and Saturday, January 30 and 31, HOMEGROWN moves to the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach. Friday’s programs include notable author appearances, storytelling, and creative writing workshops for students from The Mississippi Gulf Coast’s middle and high schools.

Saturday’s programs take on a regional book festival feel by building on Mississippi’s notable place in American literature. HOMEGROWN 2026 will host more than 30 acclaimed Southern authors, chefs and their artistic coffee table cookbooks, award-winning poets, eclectic memoirs, fascinating storytellers, and other emerging literary voices, presented through discussion panels, interviews, film screenings, and hands-on writing workshops. All programs are free and open to the public.
 

 
For those interested in the culinary arts, or maybe just curious, join the “Stories Though Food” discussion panel hosted by renowned chefs Marcelle Bienvenu, Melissa M. Martin, Dale Gray, and Phillip Ashley Rix. These chefs and cookbook authors offer a wide spectrum of experience and unmatched palates, in styles ranging from New Orleans, to Memphis, and even to South Africa.
  
On Friday, January 30, Pass Christian Books will host a HOMEGROWN event titled In Conversation with W. Ralph Eubanks, who is currently the writer-in-residence at the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi. Additionally, Betsy Bradley, the Executive Director of the Mississippi Museum of Art (MMA) in Jackson, will join Eubanks for a robust discussion centered on his new book, When It’s Darkness on the Delta: How America’s Richest Soil Become Its Poorest Land. The book was released on January 13 and will be available for purchase.
 
Other panels will feature the topics of memoirs, adult fiction, romance novels, poetry in motion, adult nonfiction, young adult literature, and a panel by Texas-based publisher Madville Press featuring several of its authors.
 

 
For aspiring writers, HOMEGROWN will feature two special breakout sessions. A creative writing “word-shop” session for adults will be led by noted author and investigative journalist Ellen Ann Fentress (book, The Steps We Take), and a session entitled "Navigating the Publishing World for Writers" will be presented by Johnnie Bernhard.

HOMEGROWN: A STORIED EXCHANGE is produced in partnership by the Hancock County Library System, the Harrison County Library System, the Long Beach Public Library, and the Jackson-George Regional Library System in Pascagoula. Additional partners include the historic 100 Men Hall, dba, the Thacker Mountain Radio Hour, Mississippi Public Broadcasting's THINK RADIO network, the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park Campus and its Live Oak Writing Project, Pass Christian Books, and local media partners the Shoofly Magazine and Sea Coast Echo. The Driftwood Hotel is launching Campfire Cinema, with Christmas-themed movies every Friday in December. The multimillion-dollar renovation of the former Oak Park and Gulf Grove Apartments in Waveland is expected to be completed in the next several months.

The apartment complexes formerly known as Oak Park and Gulf Grove Apartments in Waveland were considered an eyesore for years and were condemned by the city in 2024.
 

 
The Thrash Group of Hattiesburg took over the troubled complex on Waveland Avenue in July, 2024 and began working on the project soon afterwards. Renovations on the 236 units include new roofs, windows, interiors, and appliances. Work is being done by Thrash’s construction partner, Jackson Brothers Construction.
 

  
All work is expected to be completed by spring/summer 2026. The renovated complex will be renamed Park West.
 
The property will offer units with a choice of four floor plans and 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom options. Most of the units will be two bedrooms, and all units have one bathroom. The average size of a unit is 873 square feet.
 

 
Amenities at the complex will include a swimming pool, tennis court, in-unit laundry and controlled access. The property covers nearly 20 acres and will have 47 buildings and 378 parking spaces. There will be a standalone rental office on site. The two-story buildings will have wood frame construction.
 

 
Tracey Ross, director of asset management for Thrash Group, said that no information about the rent structure is available at this time.
 

 
Thrash Group said the property “boasts an ideal location” on U.S. 90, a major regional corridor. “This solid location is well positioned for long-term value growth with direct proximity to major employment centers and book-ended in each direction by significant employment bases."

This year's Taste of Hancock takes on more meaning as the organization celebrates 100 years of service to Hancock County's business community.

The fourth annual Taste of Hancock returns on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, from 6 to 8 pm at the Bay St. Louis Community Center on Blaize Avenue.

Hosted by the Hancock County Community Development Foundation in partnership with Hancock Whitney and the Hancock Chamber of Commerce, this year’s Taste of Hancock will be bigger, bolder, and more delicious than ever, celebrating the Chamber’s 100th anniversary and the rich culinary spirit that defines Hancock County.

“This event brings our community together to celebrate what makes Hancock County special—our incredible restaurants and people,” said event chair John Ferrucci, a longtime tourism leader. “It’s a one-night culinary journey across Hancock County supporting local tourism and community growth.”

The evening kicks off with Chamber After Hours from 5 to 6 pm hosted by Hancock Whitney, offering Chamber members an exclusive pre-tasting social hour at no additional cost.

When the gong sounds at 6 pm, doors open for the main event. Guests will savor signature dishes, desserts, and craft cocktails from more than 20 of Hancock County’s top restaurants, bars, and beverage purveyors. The skies parted and raindrops fell, but that didn’t stop crowds from gathering to celebrate the much-anticipated grand opening of 124 Court Street. Hosted by HL Raymond Properties, the ribbon-cutting marked the debut of a project that blends historical reverence with modern luxury. Located on the site of the former Seacoast Echo building, and before that, Bay Motors, the property is already being hailed as one of the most significant additions to downtown Bay St. Louis in recent years.
 

 
From the beginning, the goal was to create a space that honored the history of the site while offering upscale living and commercial opportunities for a new generation. The result is a striking development featuring three commercial spaces currently available for sale on the ground floor and a variety of condominium units above, ranging from efficient studios to spacious three-bedroom homes.
 
Inside, the design leans into luxury and convenience. Each residence boasts high-end finishes, thoughtful layouts, and elegant touches that set it apart. Amenities include a fully equipped gym, a cozy library for residents, a rooftop patio with sweeping views of the Gulf of Mexico, indoor storage areas, and even dedicated golf cart parking, a nod to the unique lifestyle in the Bay.

The Wedding Collection, known for their impeccable eye, perfectly executed a 1930s-inspired theme that suited the building’s storied past. Guests arriving at Court Street were welcomed by the sounds of a live jazz band, led by Holly’s father, filling the air with the rhythm and soul of the era.
 

 
On the street outside, a vintage 1930s Ford automobile stood on proud display. The car wasn’t just a prop; it was a visual reminder of the decades of history tied to the property and a symbol of the timelessness the developers hoped to achieve.
 
One of the most poignant moments of the day came when Holly presented Jeff and Sandy Belcher, the new owners of the Seacoast Echo, with the original historic sign that had graced the property for many years. Passing it into their hands was symbolic, an acknowledgment of the Echo’s enduring legacy and the continuation of Bay St. Louis’s rich narrative. The moment drew applause and more than a few misty eyes, as attendees recognized the weight of history woven into the celebration.

 
HL Raymond’s agents guided guests on tours of the various units, pointing out both the large-scale features and the thoughtful details. From the ten-foot ceilings that elevate each space to custom finishes that define a sense of luxury, every element was designed with care. One clever touch that drew particular admiration was the placement of elevated electrical outlets in bedrooms, allowing for seamless television installation without visible cords. It’s these small but intentional details that set 124 Court Street apart from other developments.
 

 
The project is already generating significant buzz, not only among prospective homeowners but also within the local business community. With its combination of prime location, upscale amenities, and deep respect for Bay St. Louis’s history, 124 Court Street is poised to become one of the city’s most sought-after addresses.

With four decades of devotion to Hancock County during some of the region's most desperate days, Adam's community service is indisputable.

​In front of 500 community leaders and dignitaries, the Hancock Chamber of Commerce delivered its highest honor last week, naming Brian “Hooty” Adam as 2025 Citizen of the Year during the Chamber’s Centennial Celebration Gala.

“On the eve of Katrina’s anniversary, I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award than Hooty,” said Chamber Executive Director Tish Williams. 

For over four decades, Adam has been a cornerstone of Hancock County. Serving more than 20 years as director of the Hancock County Emergency Management Agency, he guided our community through defining moments in its history. After Hurricane Katrina, Adam’s leadership was pivotal in our recovery efforts, and just three years later, he was once again put to the test during the Gulf oil spill. His legacy is marked by resilience, dedication, and service, not only in times of crisis, but also in his commitment to mentoring youth through sports and community engagement.

The gala also highlighted nine additional honorees whose contributions continue to strengthen Hancock County:

The evening marked more than an awards ceremony; it was a celebration of 100 years of business and civic leadership, tracing its roots back to the Chamber’s founding in 1925 by the Rotary Club of Bay St. Louis.

You are invited to help the staff of the Kiln Library celebrate the 25th anniversary of their building on Highway 603. Twenty-five years ago this month, the Kiln Library celebrated the dedication of its “new” building.

One of five local libraries operated by the Hancock County Library System (HCLS), the Kiln Library spent its earlier “formative years” as a tenant of the Hancock County Farm Bureau, according to Andrea Moreau, the current community branch manager.

In 1977, prior to its tenancy with the Farm Bureau, a temporary library was established in the Kiln area of Hancock County to serve residents of the Kiln and Diamondhead. The branch had approximately 4,000 volumes at the time it moved to the Farm Bureau building in 1980.
 

 
The new library building broke ground in 1999 and was completed in February, 2000, made possible with the assistance of federal funds through a Library Services and Construction Act grant through the Mississippi Library Commission. The Hancock County Board of Supervisors allocated the matching funds along with an additional $1.2 million to construct the building.

On February 24, 2000, the new branch of the Kiln Library was opened and dedicated with a ribbon-cutting attended by 500 people. The current facility occupies 10,000 square feet and holds more than 25,000 items, including the new “Library of Things.”
 

 
The Kiln branch was featured in Library Journal’s architectural issue in December of 2000 and was the subject of a feature article in Mississippi Libraries.

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Kiln Library will offer special programs and activities throughout the week of February 24-28, including its popular “standing room only” sewing workshops, a timely seasonal “Garden Talk,” retro movie day, and a children’s story time, including special treats from the Kiln Library staff.
 

 
The celebration culminates with an Open House on Friday, February 28, 2:00-4:00 pm, at its 17065 Highway 603 location. The public is welcome to attend, and refreshments will be provided. Residents are invited to sign a guest book that will be archived and to participate in the library’s programming, available at no charge.

Aspiring writers, take heed: The Hancock County Library System (HCLS) will sponsor its third annual “Homegrown: A Writers’ Exchange” event on Saturday, February 1, on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required due to limited space. (Follow this link for online registration.) Doors open at 8:30 am with programs starting at 9:00 am and running all day at multiple venues on campus.
 
This year, one highlight of the event will be a conversation with best-selling author Lisa Genova. Genova, author of Still Alice (made into a film starring Julianne Moore), included this event in her national book tour promoting her latest book, More or Less Maddy (Simon & Schuster). The book tells the story of a young woman diagnosed with bipolar disorder. As a Harvard-educated neuroscientist, Genova is intimately familiar with her subject matter.

 
She will be talking with Mississippi native Katy Simpson-Smith, who recently was awarded the Adult Fiction Book of the Year for her work, The Weeds, a novel that contrasts the lives of two women living in different centuries but joined by a place and a mission — to catalog the weeds of the Colosseum.
 
Homegrown weaves its theme, “storytelling,” through its various sessions, according to Kevin Cole, who handles PR and marketing for the library system. “Writers tell stories much of the time,” noted Cole, “and Mississippians are known to be great storytellers.”

Other sessions include:

• One of the most widely known and award-winning professional storytellers, Diane Williams (Jackson, MS), will lead a multi-disciplinary panel of authors, a musician, and an artist/photographer in a program that cuts across a broad interest level. Margot Cooper (author of Deep Inside the Blues), Dan Gutstein (author of Poor Gal), Karen Lewis (active in the Perkinson-based Living Tree Oral History Project), and Williams will present a lively discussion that is sure to appeal to a broad range of literary fans.

 

• “The Art of the Cookbook,” moderated by Malcolm White (Hal & Mal’s Restaurant, Jackson) and featuring authors/chefs Mellissa M. Martin, author of the new cookbook, Bayou; Dale Gray, author of the food travelogue South of Somewhere; author Matt Haines (The Big Book of King Cake); and author, chef and travel writer Robert St. John (Mississippi Mornings). Books by the participating authors will be available for sale and signing.

 

• New Orleans-based M.O. (Neal) Walsh, whose book, The Big Door Prize, recently inspired an Apple TV+ limited series, will be talking with Beth Kander, playwright and author of I Made It Out of Clay, published in December and already on the Amazon Best-Sellers list amid rave reviews. Walsh is the director of the creative writing graduate program at the University of New Orleans, while Kander serves as an adjunct faculty at the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus.

• Acclaimed New Orleans-based author and award-winner Jason Berry will discuss his book and accompanying documentary film, City of a Million Dreams, a historical look at NOLA’s vanishing tradition of second-line funerals, with Rachel Dangermond, director of the 100 Men Hall in Bay St. Louis.

 

• Lauren Rhoades, founder of the online magazine Rooted, will join author Lee Durkee (The Last Taxi Driver) and share stories about their inspiration and motivation.

 

• In “(Re)Visiting Katrina: Year 20,” a panel of authors who wrote personal accounts of their experiences will share their thoughts. Moderator Bernie Cullen, director of the Ground Zero Hurricane Museum in Waveland, will be joined by author Margaret McMullan (Aftermath Lounge), journalist and photographer Ellis Anderson (Under Surge, Under Siege), and the author of Cajun Navy Ground Force, Rob Gaudet.

• “(Re)Introducing Walter Anderson” will feature a panel discussion of the noted writer and painter featuring authors John Anderson (The Bicycle Logs of Walter Anderson), Mary Anderson Pickard (Anderson’s Alice), and Kendell Dunkleberg (Barrier Island Suite) moderated by Julian Rankin, director of the Walter Anderson Museum of Art.

• “Children’s Literature” will feature authors Marshall Ramsey (Saving Sam! A Banjo the Dog Story), Bay St. Louis’s best-selling Amazon books author Natalie Guess (The Biggest, The Oldest, The Strongest), and Emily Liner (Stretch Like Scarlet), with moderator and author Andrea Moreau, who will all offer insight and tips on writing for children.

 

• The “Ya Literature” panel will feature discussions of Young Adult literature with Florida author Phillippe Diederich (Diamond Park) and Johnnie Bernhard (Hannah and Ariela) moderated by Tracy Carr.

 

• Eudora, a documentary film about writer Eudora Welty by Mississippi filmmaker and author/artist Anthony Thaxton, will be screened in the afternoon session. The film premiered at the prestigious Mississippi Book Festival in September. An author Q & A session will follow the film screening.

It’s hard to believe that the Hancock Library System’s holiday tree decorating competition will celebrate its thirtieth year in 2024, and the Library Foundation promises the event will be bigger and better than ever.

BAY ST. LOUIS (November 26, 2024) - When the doors open at the community branch of the Bay St. Louis Library on Sunday, December 8, it will mark the thirtieth time for the library system to celebrate the holiday season with its display of specially decorated holiday trees. The trees are designed around a specific theme selected each year by the committee of the Library Foundation of Hancock County which has sponsored the December event since 1994.

The theme for this year is “A Claus for Celebration,” reinforcing the importance of both the longevity of the program and emphasizing the importance that the Library Foundation plays in Hancock County communities.

​Holding to tradition, the Bay St. Louis branch will be the first to kick-off the Holiday Tree Celebration with an open house on Sunday, December 8, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. The afternoon reception will feature Santa photos, the popular ornament scavenger hunt, music, good cheer, and many decorated holiday trees. The family-friendly event is free and open to the public. “From our research, this is the longest running event of this kind in the state of Mississippi,” declared Dr. Sherry Ponder, current board president for the Library Foundation. “This year marks the thirtieth anniversary for this holiday celebration. The event always features some of the most creative and highly decorated holiday trees you’d ever want to see.”

John Brdecka, executive director for the Hancock County Library System (HCLS) added, “We expect this year’s Holiday Tree Celebration to be among the best ever. Trees are already being installed at each of our five local branches, and response to this year’s event has been exceptional.” In 2023, the HCLS saw more than 140 specially decorated holiday trees grace its facilities, all done by area businesses and local organizations. Prizes are awarded to winning entries, and a “People’s Choice Award” is selected every year.

Brdecka added, “December is a time for the library system to show its appreciation to its patrons and all of those individuals, organizations, and businesses who support its mission throughout the year. The Holiday Tree Celebration recognizes the Library Foundation of Hancock County, which provides the funding that makes this event possible. We hope that as the year ends, people remember to support the Library Foundation through thoughtful donations.”

There is still time for exhibitors to participate, as entries will be accepted until judging takes place. Judging for awards and prizes will take place on Friday, December 6. Persons must contact their local library branch directly for details and registration. Trees can be added after the judging deadline, but late entries will not be eligible for the judging and awards.

Indoor shopping, free parking, local shops & artists are all in store at this 28th annual event, which features many local artists and craft vendors.

Shops and artists from Bay St. Louis, Diamondhead, Pass Christian and Waveland will be featured at the 28th annual Holiday Boutique. The event will be hosted by the Pass Christian Yacht Club’s Ladies Auxiliary on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9. Hours are 10 am- 5 pm on Friday and 10 am - 4 pm on Saturday.

The two-day shopping event became so popular that the venue was changed to the spacious Espy Center, 4670 Espy Avenue. What hasn’t changed is the focus on showcasing beautiful art and products created or available here on the Gulf Coast.

“What distinguishes our Holiday Boutique is the emphasis we place on providing regional shops and artisans an opportunity to display their merchandise and talent,” said Jo Ann Francingues, boutique chairwoman. “The Holiday Boutique is a comfortable, indoor – rain or shine – shopping experience with free parking. And, despite inflation, we are keeping the ticket price at $5, the same as in years past.”

Cabi on the Coast, Dee’s Nutrition, Finding Wonder Books, LambShop Studio, La Terre Farms, Micey Moyer Artist, Pass Christian Books, Patti’s Crafts, Robins Nest, Sugar Magnolia Boutique and The Jolly Olive are among the local vendors that will be offering original artwork, unique gifts, handcrafted and customized pieces, and homemade holiday goodies.

On Friday, the lovely voices of the Pass Christian High School Choir will welcome visitors at 10 am. Entertainment on Saturday will begin at noon with the Gulfport High School Orchestra followed by a visit from Santa Claus.

After years of serving the community, the Hancock Resource center just moved into a larger space that will help them provide even more.

My favorite month of the year is October. The weather starts to cool off, even though it’s still hot. For us on the Gulf Coast, Cruisin’ the Coast unofficially kicks off the holiday season. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, especially with the annual Boo in the Bay parade and Witches Walk. More importantly, though, October is also a month that represents several causes close to my heart.
  
Most people know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. But did you know that October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month? Purple ribbons are worn or displayed to raise awareness about the prevalence and severity of Domestic Violence in the United States.
 

 
The Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence reports that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have been victimized by an intimate partner. To put that in perspective, if you are looking at a group of 25 women, six of them have been or will be a victim of intimate partner violence. A jarring fact for sure, but something we as a community need to discuss.
 
Domestic violence is not just physical; it can include emotional manipulation and verbal abuse. Abusive partners can be extremely controlling and limit their partner’s access to family, friends, and resources. The Hancock Resource Center (HRC) works to combat these issues and help families get a fresh start by providing housing, supportive services, and advocacy.
 

 
The HRC offers programs for housing the homeless, housing and employing veterans in need, and providing critical infrastructure repairs or updates to the homes of the elderly.  A full list of HRC’s programs can be found on their website HERE.
 
Also beginning in October, HRC reaches beyond their normal programs to host specialized holiday programs for families in need. These programs include the Salvation Army Angel Tree, Toys for Tots, Teen Angels, and Santa’s Families. Registration for the Salvation Army Angel Tree program has already passed, but Toys for Tots and Teen Angel registration is happening now. The angels and their wish lists will be released soon.
 

 
Help keep Christmas magical by adopting and shopping for a child or family! While some of the requests may seem extravagant, keep in mind that many of these children are hoping to receive some of Santa’s special magic. I know when I was a little girl, I dreamed of getting the latest toys and would be thrilled on Christmas morning when Santa knew EXACTLY what to bring.
 
Young children are easy to shop for, but teenagers can be a little trickier. Most teenagers, in my experience, love receiving gift cards so they can spend the money how they wish. Some good choices are Walmart, Best Buy, Ulta, GameStop, Academy, or any restaurant. Hancock Resource Center accepts toys and gift cards throughout the holiday season to help fulfill these wishes.
  
In addition to fulfilling Christmas wishes, HRC also works to address the needs of recently housed families. These needs are basic home items such as pots and pans, silverware, plates, kitchen towels, bath towels, bed sheets, blankets, shower curtains, pillows, rugs, TV’s, bed frames, mattresses, tables, and chairs. HRC will post specific needs for “Santa’s Families” but will also gladly accept general donations of new, unopened items as well. The need is highest during the holiday season, but donations are accepted year-round.
 

 
Finally, HRC is thrilled to announce their move to a new building. The Resource Center is now located at 887 Washington Street, Bay St. Louis, behind the government annex building. The new building offers plenty of space for HRC to serve the community and respect the privacy of community members.
 
One feature HRC is excited to share of is the community classroom. Thanks to a Coast Electric Round Up grant, the Community Education Center is a room that will be open to the community to reserve for educational classes and after-hours meetings. The room seats up to 25 and is equipped with tables, chairs, a screen for presentations, speakers, and the various other equipment needed.
 
The community will have a chance to see the beautiful new building when Hancock Resource Center hosts a ribbon cutting with the Hancock Chamber in November.

After a successful inaugural event last year spotlighting Stennis Space Center’s contributions to its neighboring communities, organizers have planned a stellar follow-up in November 2024.
 
Port Air Space Day in the Bay will be held on Saturday, November 9, from 11 am to 4 pm on the grounds of the historic Hancock County Courthouse at 152 Main Street. Additional exhibits will be featured in the adjacent yard of Main Street United Methodist Church.
 
The main sponsor this year is the Hancock County Port & Harbor Commission.

 
The event is produced by event coordinator Janice Guido of Partners for Stennis & Michoud, a volunteer group that advocates for space, earth, and ocean exploration. Guido is supported by assistant coordinator Melanie Hotard and an experienced committee of 12 members.
 
“This is our second year doing this event, and I have to thank Blaine LaFontaine, executive director of HCPHC, and his Board of Commissioners for stepping up quickly as our top sponsor,” said Guido. “They are the perfect partner to help showcase Hancock County’s ever-growing Port, Space and Ocean technology and business efforts in our coastal county.”
 

 
During this special celebration, more than 40 exhibits will showcase various entities involved in supporting and growing local port, space and ocean businesses.
 
“We are bringing them from Port and Harbor’s Stennis Airport sites as well as the NASA Stennis grounds to the public so people can speak to their staff and learn what they do, including internships and job opportunities,” Guido said. “In addition, the event organizers want to expose our children, teens, community colleges, and four-year schools to the exciting jobs right here in our own county.” 
 ​

 
LaFontaine said, "As a father with deep roots in Hancock County, it was an easy decision to sponsor this event, which will help our children pursue STEM-related jobs right here at home.”
 
Major sponsors include Aerojet Rocketdyne L3Harris, Relativity Space, NASA Stennis/Michoud, Goldbelt Integrated Logistics Service, Lockheed Martin and Rocket Lab. Guido said more major sponsors are being added each day.

Other exhibits and participants include the Hancock County Historical Society, NOAA, NAVOCEANO, Pearl River Community College, Hancock County Library System and Hancock High Robotics/STEM teams.

Cruisin’ the Coast is upon us! We at the Shoofly love this time of year, as Cruisin’ is the official kickoff of the holiday season – at least in our minds! Although not originally from the Gulf Coast, Eyster knows that the Bay is the perfect place for him and his family now.

This school year, the Bay High Tigers welcomed Warren Eyster as the school’s new principal.
 
Principal Eyster isn’t originally from Hancock County, but he is no stranger to Mississippi. Originally from Hammond, Louisiana, Eyster first moved to Mississippi in 2003 to play football for Delta State University.
 

 
Most of Eyster’s family still lives in Hammond; his daughter plays softball for McNeese State University. No surprise here, but he’s also a lifelong LSU and Saints fan and really enjoys cheering for the Tigers this season.
 

 
Prior to accepting the role at Bay High, Eyster was the principal of two secondary schools near McComb. After more than 15 years in education, Eyster is hoping Bay High is his final stop. Before stepping into administration, he taught high school-level social studies and comprehensive health.
 

 
The Eyster family has long considered the Bay a favorite spot for relaxation, good music, and fun on the water. Eyster said, “I fell in love with the town and the people!”. When he saw the position at Bay High posted, he couldn’t pass it up. 
 

 
Principal Eyster is excited to join the team and looks forward to working with the outstanding teaching staff and supporting his students. He’s optimistic about Bay High’s future, hoping that the school soon ranks in the top ten high schools in the state. Said Eyster, “We are close!”

Hancock County will host its biannual Hazardous Waste Day on Saturday, March 23, 2024. This year, the event will be held at the Hancock County Arena at 4184 Kiln-Delisle Road in the Kiln.
 
Collection will begin at 8 am and go until 1 pm. The event is set up to be a drive-through drop off. Participants will remain in their vehicles while volunteers collect the items to be disposed of from the trunk or truck bed of the vehicle. Items can also be brought on an open trailer. Because all participants will remain in their vehicle, only items meant to be disposed of should be in the trunk of the vehicle. No hazardous material should be carried on the back seat.

It’s important to dispose of these items properly in order to prevent ground water contamination.
 
Other items perfect for this opportunity are out-of-service appliances, fluorescent (CFC) bulbs, used tires, oil pans, and any type of battery. A full list of eligible items can be found on the flier below. This event is not for the collection of construction materials, yard debris, ammunition, medical waste, 55-gallon drums, explosive or radioactive materials, or waste from any business.

The Second Saturday Artwalk has drawn locals and visitors from across the region for over 30 years.  Every monthly celebration offers live music, art openings and shop/restaurant specials. 

Specially themed Second Saturdays, like "Dolly Should" in January and "Frida Fest" in July, have become beloved highlights of the year.  

And there's SOUPer Mudfest each March, now in its 16th year.  It's expected to attract thousands of people to the Old Town district during its one-night-only stint. 

​And, with just $25, you can be a part of the festivities supporting Hancock County Tourism, the Old Town Merchants Association, Ruth's Roots Blessing Box, and various local artists. 
​

But business owners embraced the dirtiness and grittiness, turning it into a chance to celebrate the spirit of living and survival.  People decorated their shrimp boots and came out for Second Saturday.  The soiree went on.  

Eventually, the streets were repaired, and downtown Bay St. Louis returned to something that seemed more or less normal. There was no more mud, no more shrimp boots.

​Moynan saw the void left by the old mudfest. “I owned a gallery at the time, and I represented a lot of potters,” she said.  Potters, being “mudslingers,” could provide the “mud” part of a new mudfest. “I got with the potters and said, ‘Let’s make bowls and sell soup with the bowls,’” Moynan said. 

It was a chance for the Bay’s restaurant and business owners, herself included, to show off some of their best recipes, and the town to show that, despite the destruction of those years, it was still alive and kicking. Mudfest, like Bay St. Louis, experienced a rebirth. 

That first year, Moynan gathered a team of six potters to make 280 bowls and enlisted a host of local businesses to serve soup. They set up shop under a tent at the corner of Main and 2nd Streets. The Mudfest’s entire stock sold out in the first hour. It seems that Bay St. Louis residents were hungry for such an event.

​Every year since, SOUPer Mudfest has grown. In 2018, Moynan says that 8 to 10 potters will create more than 800 bowls and attendees will be treated to soups from 30 local businesses. In the past, tomato basil, white bean osso buco, corn and crab bisque, and the Southern staple gumbo have all been on the menu, but Moynan said, “You have no idea what you’re in for this year. It’s always something cool and interesting.”  

SOUPer Mudfest continues to be a chance for visitors and community members to “see how fantastic our town is,” Moynan said. The $25 fee doesn’t just buy a bowl or soup. The money, split among the potters, Old Town Merchants’ Association, Ruth's Roots Blessing Box, and the Hancock County Tourism board, goes to maintaining the indomitable, Bohemian spirit that makes Bay St. Louis great.

Their own research favored opening in the Bay market, and when the post office building became available, the LeBlancs decided to move forward.
 
“We’re very excited about the building,” Christy said. “The old post office couldn’t be more perfect.” The building has parking spaces behind it, and they added space out front for golf carts. Walls have been added to the spacious interior of the building for shopping space, and the LeBlancs are considering using other corners of the building where Main Street shoppers can get coffee or grab-and-go food items. The large basement will also be available for future use.
 
The Main Street store will sell merchandise similar to what’s offered in Covington but more specific to Bay St. Louis. There will be outdoor attire for hunting, fishing, and boating, as well as business casual attire, accessories, and devices.
 

“In Covington, we may have a little bit more woodsy, hunting-type apparel. In Bay St. Louis, we will have more beachy-type items,” Christy said. Brands are constantly being added in Covington and will also be in the new store. The LeBlancs went to a men’s retail market in Austin recently to buy merchandise for next year.
 
The LeBlancs will be on hand to run things as they staff up the Bay store.
 
Hours will be Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm. A grand opening will be held early next year.
