Gallery 220: Artistic Expression and Community Connection

1/11/2024

Partner Spotlight - January 2024
Nestled in the heart of Main Street, the vibrant red and white building at 220 Main Street serves as the anchor for a thriving artistic community.

A haven for creativity, Gallery 220 not only captivates passers-by with its eye-catching exterior; it invites them into a world where original creations murals delight, window displays captivate, and public pieces on the sidewalk attract visitors inside.

Upon entering, visitors are treated to a visual feast. Gallery 220 is a unique co-op that showcases the diverse works of over 20 talented artists, each contributing their distinctive flair to the gallery’s eclectic collection.

Among the featured artists are well-loved names like Regan Carney, Herb Wiley, Michelle Allee, Spencer Gray, Barbara Brodtmann, and many others. What sets Gallery 220 apart is its dynamic approach – artists rotate, taking turns working in the gallery. This not only provides exposure for every artist, but it also fosters a sense of camaraderie as they interact with patrons and learn about each other’s artistic journeys.

Building owners Janise McCardell and Mark Currier also run Clay Creations in the rear of the gallery, creating handmade, hand-painted items depicting local scenes and landmarks from New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. From placards and tiles to door hangers, switch plate covers, and Christmas ornaments, these adorable creations are made on site, offering patrons a delightful opportunity to witness the artists at work.

But Gallery 220 is far more than just a space for showcasing art; it is also a testament to community spirit and resilience. Gallery 220’s origin story is intertwined with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Formed just five weeks after the devastating hurricane, the gallery emerged as a supportive haven for displaced artists. Two decades later, it stands as a symbol of endurance and will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2025. The longevity of Gallery 220 can be attributed not only to the resilience of the artists it supports but also to the unwavering dedication of its owners. McCardell and Currier have fostered a sense of community, with the gallery at its heart, creating personal connections between patrons and artists.

Situated at the corner of Main and Toulme Streets, Gallery 220 beckons art enthusiasts to explore its diverse range of art, including paintings, pottery, sculptures, jewelry, t-shirts, and more. What makes Gallery 220 truly special is its commitment to accessibility, catering to a variety of styles and price points, ensuring that art becomes an enriching experience for everyone who enters the gallery’s doors.

In essence, Gallery 220 transcends its role as a mere art gallery; it stands as a living testament to the transformative power of creativity, community, and enduring passion. As it approaches its 20th year, Gallery 220 continues to be a hub of inspiration for both artists and patrons alike.
