Established by Yuki Northington in 2006 in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Social Chair became a beacon of hope and a catalyst for renewal in the community. What began as a place for residents to find unique and upscale decor to rebuild their homes soon evolved into a fashion-forward paradise for women who appreciate the allure of a little, or a lot, of sparkle.

The Reef at Pearl Hotel isn’t just a gift shop; it is a microcosm of local culture and art, offering a unique blend of apparel, sundries, and an exclusive collection of art pieces. After opening its doors in April of 2022, The Reef has quickly become an integral part of the community and a central feature of the Pearl Hotel’s vision to pay homage to the rich oyster culture of the area.

The Reef’s inventory is a curated selection of local and quality items. The Bay’s own Mad Potter, Steve Barney, contributes beautiful custom pieces. Drinkware and apparel are sourced from Toadfish Outfitters, showcasing their distinctive, outdoors-inspired style. Locally painted oyster ornaments and jewelry created by the Pearl Hotel and Reef’s team members give a personal touch to the shopping experience.

Original artwork from Pass Roots decorates the space, along with footwear and durable handbags by Havaianas, adding a fashionable twist. Knockarounds supplies sunglasses and beach blankets, while a variety of products from Sun Bum add to the beachfront appeal. From beach chair and umbrella rentals to snacks, drinks, swimwear, and more, The Reef is the complete package for tourists and locals alike.

100 Men Hall
303 Union Street, BSL | (415) 336-9543

Picture

100 Men Hall has stood as a landmark and defender of cultural expression and social justice for over a century. Founded in 1894, this renowned venue was built by a community historically denied access to public spaces, becoming one of the few surviving landmarks of the infamous Chitlin Circuit.

The 100 Men Hall is a powerful testament to the role of art as a vehicle for activism, with decades of resilience against the oppressive Jim Crow South. It provided a sanctuary and platform for artists to defy social norms, creating a legacy of artistic expression that resonates to this day.

Picture

In 2018, Rachel Dangermond purchased the Hall not knowing the full extent of its history. Her initial goal was to find a space for her writer's workshops and community dialogues on race and equity. But as she discovered the Hall’s rich history, she was inspired to continue the tradition of using art to tell stories by showcasing a variety of performing, spoken, visual, and literary work, while still being a stage for live music.

Today, the Hall is upheld by its membership organization, 100 WOMEN DBA, honoring the nonprofit’s original mission: to uplift people of color, particularly women and girls, in the community. They've supported scholarships for high school students and helped local businesses expand, like Big Bertha’s Kitchen and Catering. They also celebrate cultural diversity through events like A Soulful Christmas and Juneteenth Jubilees and have even expanded to include the Latin (Day of the Dead), Jewish (The Matzo Ball), LGBTQ (drag shows, Happy and Gay Hour) and other underrepresented communities.

Every Second Saturday, the 100 Men Hall transforms into a haven for writers: The Writing Room. It’s a unique assembly where writers convene to craft their tales within a place steeped in its own stories. At the helm of this creative vessel is author in residence, Ellen Morris Prewitt.

On this upcoming Second Saturday, August 12, join the The Writing Room at 100 Men Hall from 10 am to 1 pm. Not only is the experience richly rewarding, but it is also completely free of charge. To secure your spot at this enchanting workshop, kindly send your registration to 100menhall@gmail.com.

To coincide with Second Saturday, the 100 Men Hall hosts their popular Second Sunday Blues Brunches. The event features the best of blues music and the finest in dining all served in a historical setting. On August 13, from 11 am-1 pm, the Blues Brunch will feature New Orleans-born guitarist Jimmy Robinson and New Orleans-based singer-songwriter and slide guitarist Layla Musselwhite. Tickets are available for $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

Be sure to reserve space in your calendar for the highly anticipated annual Booker Fest, hosted by 100 Men Hall. Traditionally held over Labor Day weekend, this vibrant festival honors the musical legacy of James Booker. This year, the fourth annual Booker Fest will be held September 1-3.

Booker Fest is Bay Saint Louis’ own music festival that features top-tier musicians and performers. But it's not just about the music; it's an all-encompassing sensory feast! Revel in the delectable offerings of various food, enjoy libations to your heart’s content, and don’t forget to partake in the lively drag brunch!
