In the vibrant landscape of Bay St. Louis, the Shoofly Magazine stands out as a beacon of community connection and cultural vibrancy. As a hyperlocal publication, its mission is to enhance the quality of life for residents and connect those afar with the unique communities of Bay St. Louis, Waveland, Diamondhead, and Pass Christian. This mission encompasses supporting local businesses and non-profits, fostering a sense of pride and awareness within the community.

As a free, local online magazine, the Shoofly thrives with the support of its annual partners and reader-sponsors. This model of community-backed journalism ensures that the magazine remains deeply rooted in the interests and values of the people it serves.

The magazine’s journey began in 2011 as an online newsletter, initially named “4th Ward Cleaver,” a humorous nod to a 1950s TV show character. Founded by writer Ellis Anderson and a group of Bay St. Louis residents, it quickly gained a devoted readership. By 2014, the newsletter had evolved into a full-scale magazine, improving both in content quantity and quality, and its readership surged.

In 2016, recognizing its expanded reach and subject matter, the magazine was aptly renamed “The Shoofly Magazine: Bay St. Louis Living.” The name, inspired by the iconic shoofly deck near the old City Hall, symbolizes elevated community conversation. Under the leadership of Wendy McDonald and Jessica Bilotta since 2022, and with Kirby Rhodes as the current editor, the Shoofly Magazine continues to evolve, promising new features and more engaging content.

This Second Saturday, January 13, the Shoofly Magazine celebrates its Hotspot status with a special setup at Winters Realty at 203 North Second St., adjacent to Ms. Mary’s Old Town Snoballs. From 4 to 7 pm, Shoofly contributors will be on-site, offering a chance for community members to engage directly with the voices behind the magazine.

Join the Shoofly Magazine team this Second Saturday for an evening that promises not only fun and engagement but also a deeper connection with the heart and soul of the Bay-Waveland community. This event is a perfect reflection of what Shoofly Magazine stands for – a celebration of local life, culture, and community spirit.
