108 Cue Street, BSL
Hours: Mon-Fri 10 am -3 pm (closed 12-1); closed Sat-Sun
(Other hours available by appointment)

Nestled along Cue Street lies the Kate Lobrano House, an enchanting shotgun-style cottage that dates back to 1896. Today, this humble abode serves as the headquarters for the Hancock County Historical Society, an esteemed organization that is dedicated to preserving the rich history of Hancock County and its people.

Picture

In 1988, the house was generously donated to the society by the grandchildren of Katherine Maynard Lobrano, and it has since been transformed into a turn-of-the-century museum. While most of the original structure remains intact, a sizable extension has been added to the back of the building to provide office and storage facilities for research, lectures, and social events organized by the Historical Society.

Picture

The Hancock County Historical Society is a non-profit organization that prides itself on collecting, preserving, and maintaining a vast collection of tens of thousands of documents, over 30,000 photographs, memorabilia, and artifacts. These treasures serve to educate future generations about their heritage and provide a window into the past. The society is committed to making this extensive library of information available to the public, both in person at their headquarters and online.

Picture

Over the years, the society has grown in size and influence, with membership numbers skyrocketing from fewer than a dozen to over a thousand people. This makes them one of the largest civic organizations on the Gulf Coast. The society's commitment to preserving the history of Hancock County and its people is unwavering, and their work is a testament to the power of community and the importance of honoring one's roots.

Picture

The Hancock County Historical Society hosts monthly luncheon meetings with a special speaker every third Thursday of the month. The luncheons are catered and open to the public, but reservations are required, so be sure to call the Historical Society to secure your spot.

Picture

The Historical Society also hosts the Annual Cardboard Boat Race. This year the race will be held on Saturday, May 20, in conjunction with Pirate Day in the Bay. Click on the flyer below for more information.

Picture

On Second Saturday, the Hancock County Historical Society is stepping back in time 100 years to 1923! They will be celebrating their Hot Spot status from 4 to 7 pm with music from the 1920s, a photo booth with props from the 1920s, a slideshow of vintage photos of Hancock County, a book sale, outdoor games, and more. In the spirit of Soup’er Mudfest and the 1920s, the Historical Society will also be serving “Soup’er” Sundaes (ice cream sundaes) for all their time-traveling visitors.
