New Diamondhead Police Chief Darryl Russell, Jr. Takes the Helm
The City of Diamondhead recently ushered in a new era of leadership with the retirement of its long-serving police chief, A.J. Gambino. Stepping into this pivotal role is Darryl Russell, Jr. Russell was officially sworn in on July 18, poised and eager to uphold the mission of safeguarding and serving the community of Diamondhead. Chief Russell brings a wealth of experience to his new position, boasting an exceptional career in law enforcement. His journey began in 2007 with the Waveland Police Department, where he made a name for himself by receiving accolades from the Mississippi Office of Highway Safety for his exemplary work as a traffic patrol officer, with a particular focus on seatbelt safety and child restraints. During his tenure with the Waveland Police Department, he expanded his expertise by becoming an Internationally Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician and Instructor, and he contributed his skills as a member of the Special Weapons and Tactics team. In 2012, Chief Russell was hired as a Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy, eventually finding himself assigned to the City of Diamondhead Division shortly after the city’s incorporation. He played a pivotal role in establishing Diamondhead’s first police department from the ground up and thoroughly demonstrated his dedication to the community. Throughout his tenure with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, Chief Russell undertook numerous roles, including narcotics agent, canine division sergeant, later advancing to lieutenant, director of training and standards, and ultimately assuming the mantle of narcotics commander. A lifelong resident of Hancock County, Chief Russell is an alumnus of St. Stanislaus College, the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officer Training Academy, and the esteemed FBI National Academy Session 281. In addition to his professional achievements, he serves as the vice president of the Southern State Police Benevolent Association. “I want to express my deep gratitude to the people of Diamondhead for their confidence and trust in me,” Chief Russell commented. “Being selected as police chief is a tremendous honor that I take very seriously. I am eagerly anticipating working hand-in-hand with the community to advance Diamondhead.”
Enjoy Fun in the Sun at the 4th Annual Paddle Paradise
In addition to celebrating their new police chief, Diamondhead is gearing up for the 4th annual Paddle Paradise event this weekend. This non-competitive, four-mile fun paddle on Paradise Bayou offers a unique opportunity to explore the scenic waterways that define Diamondhead, beginning and ending at the kayak launch at Diamondhead Marina. Paddle Paradise is an inclusive event, welcoming participants of all ages and fitness levels. Mayor Nancy Depreo highlighted the city’s waterfront, noting, “Diamondhead has an impressive waterfront, even though it’s not located directly on the Bay or the Gulf. We’re looking forward to hosting an event that will bring people together to enjoy the beauty of Paradise Bayou and hope to see more people on kayaks, paddle boards, and canoes in the future.” Registration for the event begins at 8 am and is available onsite and online at https://diamondhead.ms.gov/calendar. The first 150 participants to sign up will receive a complimentary t-shirt and swag bag. The paddle adventure sets off at 9 am. Following the paddle, the Camphouse will open its doors at 11 am, offering enticing food and drink specials throughout the day. The Northshore-based band, Vinyl Idol, will treat attendees to “A Tribute to the Vinyl Era” from 11 am to 2 pm featuring classic rock favorites from iconic artists such as Van Halen, White Snake, Kiss, Cheap Trick, and more. This community-centered event is free and open to the public. Participants are required to bring their own kayak, paddleboard, canoe, or other self-propelled watercraft, along with personal life jackets and safety gear.
