40,746 nominations were submitted, and 283,056 votes were cast to determine the 468 winners. Other winners in this category were Glory Bound Gyro Co. and Government Street Grocery, both in Ocean Springs. Congratulations to Rachel Dangermond and the staff at the 100 Men Hall! |
M.A.P. - Music. Arts. Practicality. - receives Mississippi Arts Commission grant
July 2019
M.A.P. - Music. Arts. Practicality. of Hancock County, MS - has been awarded a $3,900 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). This grant will be used to produce the children’s play Disney's Frozen, Jr. The grants are made possible by funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
“The Mississippi Arts Commission is proud to support arts organizations as well as arts activities and festivals around the state through grant-making,” said Malcolm White, executive director of MAC. “These funds help broaden the reach of arts by educating our communities about Mississippi’s enduring creative legacy and offering arts experiences and performances to people in nearly every area of the state.”

Five Hancock County women named "Top Influencers"
July 2019
Five Hancock County women are among 36 recognized recently as the region's "Top Influencers" by the Success Women's Conference.
Hancock women Ellis Anderson, Starr Chapman, Cynthia Chauvin, Nancy Depreo and Becky Allen Farrell all were included in the list, which calls the Influencers "true 'game-changers' who have made an impact through their talent and selfless dedication" and have had a "formative impact on their communities."

Artist Creating Photographic Community "Quilt"
July 2019Mark Geil, a photography professor at Jackson State University is creating a 360-degree photographic project using videos to explore the stories and histories of Hancock County. The residency is a project of the Center for Art and Public Exchange, an initiative of the Mississippi Museum of Art.
Hancock County is one of only three counties in Mississippi chosen for residency projects this year (along with Lafayette and Utica). |

Rum Kitchen Clinches the 2019 Restaurant Neighbor Award
July 2019John and Starr Chapman of Waveland's Rum Kitchen have been named as the state winners of the 2019 Restaurant Neighbor Award. The award is given for outstanding community service. The Chapmans were selected for starting the Hemingway Festival, which benefits the Ground Zero Hurricane Museum.

Diamondhead golf tourney raises money for veterans
July 2019In 2018, the Diamondhead Marine Corps League 1454 partnered with the Diamondhead Golf Club in order to establish a fundraiser that would support Mississippi Gulf Coast veterans in need of financial support. The Marine Corps League and the Diamondhead Golf Club raised $12,000 during its first year, with all funds going to approximately 14 veteran families in need. During the 2019 event in June the tournament successfully raised $22,000, which will all be used to support pending cases of veterans in need of financial assistance.

June 2019In a recent feature titled, "6 Foodie Finds Along The Mississippi Gulf Coast," five of the six restaurants featured are located in Hancock County. The "foodie finds" are the Mockingbird Café, Cuz's Old Town Oyster Bar and Grill, and 200 North Beach in Old Town Bay St. Louis.

Randy Ponder to be inducted into MPA Hall of Fame
June 2019The Sea Coast Echo's former publisher James R. "Randy" Ponder will be inducted into the Mississippi Press Association (MPA) Hall of Fame later this month. Chris Cochran, owner of S&L Office Supplies, is a strong believer in doing his part to improve quality of life in Hancock County. Chris has served two years as a Rotary board member and is currently on the board of the Hancock Chamber. A graduate of Leadership Hancock, he leads his employees by modeling an exemplary work ethic. Through his business, Chris donates printing to various organizations and supports CASA with “Carts4Kids,” which funds school supplies for underprivileged children. He participates in many Rotary and Chamber functions, including a new affinity program that supports the work of the small business community.

As Pastor of the Diamondhead Community Church, Rev. Jason Edwards impacts the lives of many residents on a daily basis. He is a husband and father as well as a church leader who provides spiritual guidance to those in need. He helps with the sick, youth, the grieving and poor. He is always ready to serve, sometimes without even being asked, and provides counseling for whatever the need may be. He leads numerous youth programs supporting and encouraging our youth. A true community leader, he builds harmony and fellowship with his daily actions.

He is a member of the board for Rotary and is a member of the Waveland Civic Association, serving as their Grand Marshal in 2018. A graduate of Leadership Hancock, he has volunteered with various civic associations and festivals to promote tourism. For the past 12 years, he has served as marketing manager at the Silver Slipper Casino and Hotel.

She has been on the board of the Old Town Merchants Association and the Bay Ratz Marching Battery, and is active with The Arts, Hancock County. By creating and contributing to events and the arts, Ann is creating an even more inviting city.

He has more than 32 years of healthcare experience, most recently serving as the Chief Operating Officer for Ochsner Health System-Northshore Region. He serves on the Hancock Chamber board and is a member of Rotary Club, Gulf Coast Business Council, Partners for Stennis & Michoud, the Mississippi Hospital Association Medicaid Advisory Committee and the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is a graduate of Leadership Hancock, and his experience and leadership were vital to the successful transition of Hancock Medical to an Ochsner Health System facility.

An advocate for small businesses and downtown development, she is the current President of the Hancock Chamber and has served on the boards of the Old Town Merchants Association, the Krewe of the Mystic Seahorse, the Library Foundation, Hancock County Tourism and is the incoming Chair of the Coastal Mississippi Board of Commissioners.

Sarge Washington
Sarge Washington was carrying on a family tradition when he built a bus stop in Waveland on family property at the corner of Herlihy and Hart. His mission: to provide a safe place for school children. The new facility was dedicated in memory of his father, Charlie, who helped build the original bus stop in the 1980s, and in honor of his mother, Earllean, who asked that it be rebuilt. The community project was funded by Sarge and his wife, Rebecca. Waveland Mayor Mike Smith calls Sarge “a great young man who has been following in his dad’s footsteps of caring for his community.

She started out volunteering with Friends of the Animal Shelter, St. Rose de Lima and the Historical Society and has since joined in to help The Arts, Hancock County, CASA’s gala and the Raw Oyster Marching Club. She got the Witches Walk Halloween fundraiser off to a roaring start and recently was among the volunteers who spear-headed the Cinco De Mayo meal for Kings Kitchen. Karen is a true ambassador for Hancock County helping those in need.

Hancock Chamber Recognizes Seniors

As part of the annual event, local elected officials were also on hand to congratulate the students.

BSL Volunteers Make A Difference in Belize
April 2019Six volunteers from Bay St. Louis will travel to Belize this month as part of a 30-year-old program, Dos Amigos. The Bay St. Louis Rotary club helped fund the mission trip that offers medical and dental support each year to 1200 - 1500 people who live in remote villages and don't have access to medical/dental care.

Bay St. Louis is represented each year on the trip. This year's participants are veteran Dos Amigos volunteer, Jenny Bell (whose father, Dr. Joe Lindsay co-founded the program), Dr. Peter Lucore, Laura Lucore, Elena Lucore, Rebekah Wilke and Ann Weaver.

Halls of Hope Project Brightens Youth Court
April 2019Hancock County Youth Court Judge Trent Favre initiated a "Halls of Hope" program, in which the walls of the courtroom would be used to display works by local artists. The works were unveiled during the annual Light of Hope ceremony organized by CASA of Hancock County that honors outstanding community advocates.

Magnolia Bayou Watershed Education Project Receives Award
April 2019Steve Barney, Gulf Coast "Mad Potter," STEAM educator and president of The Arts, Hancock County, received an award for his work on the Magnolia Bayou Watershed Education Project. Each award includes $5,000 to further community engagement and honors examples of successful engagement by faculty, staff and students.

St. Stanislaus Students Honored at Scholastic Art Regionals
April 2019Jack Winstead and Cameron Baehr won Gold Key Awards, and Liam Arnsdorff won a Silver Key Award in the Scholastic Art regional competition. Other Stanislaus students—Sam Booker, Trace Rhodes, Ethan Favre, Brandon Elkins, Will Scriber, Ty Peterson, and Jackson—all had artworks featured in the Art in the Pass student art exhibition on April 7. Another St. Stanislaus student, Gabe Bradford, won 2nd place in the Ceramic category.

Volunteers Pack 10,000+ Meals
April 2019Main Street United Methodist Church members joined the Bay St. Louis Rotary club to prepare more than 10,000 meals to help fight world hunger. The effort took place in a single afternoon as part of a program called Rise Against Hunger.

Waveland School Program Celebrates Black History Month
March 2019Mrs. Pamela Terry's 2nd graders at Waveland Elementary School observed Black History Month with reports on the contributions of prominent African Americans. The students chose authors, athletes, musicians, scientists, political figures and educators including Mrs. Terry to study and shared information about them with their fellow students and parents.

Mrs. Terry said Bay-Waveland superintendent Dr. Sandra Reed and Waveland Elementary principal Steven Engle encourage and support multicultural awareness programs such as the Black History Month observance.

Local Man Donates Kidney to Fellow Church Member

Hancock Chamber Honors Nikki Moon
March 2019Nikki Moon, Hancock County Chamber of Commerce Board president, was recently honored by the Chamber with an online profile commemorating Women's History Month. Moon is the owner of the Bay Town Inn, a 12-room inn in Old Town Bay St. Louis. Moon is one of five Hancock County women who have served as Board president.
