Handing Out History - Campaign Memorabilia
contributed by Martha Whitney Butler As candidates make their way along the campaign trail, they leave us with many things. Some leave us with a wonderful impression, a kiss on a baby’s forehead, a friendly handshake, a genuine smile, and often times a token that we will boast to reinforce our ideals and faith in them. These tokens may come in the form of a button, a t-shirt, even a sign placed in the yard. Could you ever imagine that these objects may one day be valuable? Over time, campaign memorabilia has become widely collected. Of course collectors seek out the oldest, rarest, most controversial pieces, but that sign in your yard could be valuable one day. Click here to read more! Congrats to our Seniors!

To all my Ward 4 Constituents,
We had two great fund raising events during the month of April to help fight cancer. Everyone involved with the “Red Beans and Rice Cook Off” and “Relay for Life “did a great job. It’s wonderful to see so many people turn out to support these events to help fight such a dreadful disease. The end of May is the beginning of the Summer Season. What a way to start the summer. Memorial Day weekend we will kick off the summer with two great festivals in the Bay-Waveland area. The first annual Harbor Fest will be in Old Town Bay St. Louis and the St. Claire Seafood Festival in Waveland on the church grounds. It’s election time again for Bay St. Louis. Tuesday, May 7th, is the Democratic Primary and June 4th will be the general election. We have over 4,000 registered voters in Bay St. Louis, so let’s have a large turnout in both elections. Four other councilmen and I are unopposed. I want to say that it has been an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens of Ward 4 the last 12 years. I look forward to serving you again for the next 4 years. I am always available to HELP anyone. Give me a call on my cell phone 216-7197 or send an email to [email protected]. Click here for Council Actions from our April Meetings. If anyone has any questions or suggestions, please email me or call 216-7197. I’ll be there for YOU. Thanks, Bobby Carrville/Maitlin for United Way
James Carville and Mary Matalin - now property owners in Bay St. Louis - were featured speakers at a United Way event held in April at the Bay-Waveland Yacht Club. Carville is a nationally known political consultant, a best-selling author, actor, producer and talk-show host. Matalin is a conservative political consultant, who served under former Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush and now co-hosts the radio program "Both Sides Now."
The couple are based in New Orleans, but they plan to build a second home on property that formerly belonged to Pete Fountain. According to the Sun Herald, the couple praised the Bay-Waveland area and the efforts of United Way. "I'm glad to be a part of this," Carville said. "I'm proud to be your neighbor." Clay Wagner (who, we might add, grew up right here in the Fourth Ward!), was honored at the event with the United Way's highest recognition for volunteers, the Tocqueville Award. photos from the event by Ellis Anderson Our Town, Old Town

When I was 15 years old, I experienced my first true love, Old Town Bay St. Louis. My first real job was working at a one-of-a-kind Old Town treasure called CB’s Coffee House, which was located at 200 N. Beach Blvd. For three years, until I was 18 years old, I was completely submerged in every aspect of Old Town culture. I know exactly how it felt to be sitting on the Dock of The Bay (watching the tides roll away). Taking strolls down Beach Blvd. Living up the aura of hanging at The Beach House, experiencing the icy cold flavor of sno-balls from the original Big E., and of course, who could forget the best burgers and slimy goodness of fresh shucked oysters straight from the Fire Dog. I remember the excitement of going to the candy shop which resided in the building next to First Methodist on Main Street. Of course, every stroll down memory lane includes stopping by “Bons Temps Rouler” to pick up our poodle skirts for Crusin’ The Coast. To read Pamela's whole story, click here! The State of the Arts

A Meal to Remember: The Underground Dining Scene in Bay St. Louis
contributed by Martha Whitney Butler Bay St. Louis has achieved a monumental goal of becoming one of the coolest small towns in North America (like we didn’t know that already). But one thing most people didn’t know was that it is also home to one of Mississippi’s first underground dining establishments - The Big Sleazy Speakeasy. Some of you may have seen a film crew around town last weekend spurring lots of curiosity from local residents and prompting many repeat drive-by stares. They were here to film one of the hippest, coolest events that has ever hit the coast- an underground dinner. The dinner, also dubbed “Feaster” due to its occurrence on Easter Sunday, was the brainchild of Fourth Ward residents, Martha Whitney Butler (yes, me, the author) and Chef Wes Debenport, Executive Chef at The West End restaurant in Waveland. Butler and Debenport founded The Big Sleazy Speakeasy in December 2011 and have been operating underground for over a year now. Dinners usually consist of about twelve patrons and course after course of food that cannot be served in a working restaurant because of limited time and cost of ingredients. With warmer weather right around the corner, some of us may not be looking forward to hitting the beach with the extra pounds from winters indulgence. A simple way to shed a few pounds is by making the switch from sugar laden sodas and other sweetened beverages to water, green tea, coffee, or even milk. The amount of calories you drink can reach as high as 500 a day! Every year in the U.S. there are 30 gallons of soda consumed PER PERSON! One aspect of our summer fun that often gets overlooked is proper hydration. The more active you are, the more water your body needs and there are many online calculators that can help you find what your water intake should be.You can add fruit, vegetables, mint and other herbs to make it more appealing. Imagine cutting 300 calories a day out of your diet by simply switching to water...now that's something to drink to! Whatever you choose, Just Move! May Birding and Gardening!

Wow, will this rain continue all through May? “Normal rain fall” for our area is 5”, yet we have gotten almost 8” in April and 2” last night, May 1st. The rain did halt long enough for rainbows to form over The Bay and right about dusk – the double rainbow was simply amazing and I was half tempted to zip across the bridge to the base of the rainbow in search of a leprechaun and a pot of gold coins. Well, fantasy aside, I am grateful that the storms are trending more west to east this year and not just streaming over us, from south to north. contributed by Allen Reed and Cathy Ruland
Don't like to poison yourself while trying to get rid of those blood-sucking skeeters? Try this! Let us hear how it works for you! From the Life Project 1. Cut the top off a soda bottle. Invert the cone and place it inside the bottom half of the bottle. 2. Secure the two pieces together, using a glue or tape. 3. Add 1 tsp yeast and ½ cup sugar to some lukewarm water, and pour the mixture into the bottle. The yeast and sugar mixture releases carbon dioxide that mosquitoes are attracted to, so the mosquito enters the bottle. Once inside the bottle, the mosquito is trapped. Fourth Sunday at Four

Cleaver Status ReportPerhaps of Interest: The Cleaver crew loosely formed in late spring of 2011 and published the first issue in July 2011, so we're coming up on our second anniversary. We imagined a few hundred people would discover us over time, never dreaming that we'd have nearly 700 Facebook friends and reach nearly 7,000 readers each month. From our mail, we're guessing lots of ex-pats are tuning in too, so they can still feel a part of the Bay St. Louis community. That makes us smile.
In April, we had over 1,200 unique viewers in the first two days of launch, breaking yet another record! Thanks for your comments and support - keep those cards and letters - and story ideas - coming! Email us here! contributors to this issue...
