Shore Thing Fishing Report, 12/13/2023

With local boat traffic is all but gone this time of year, there is nothing standing between our local charter fishermen and their quarry.

On the days we have been able to get out, the fishing has been very good. We are leaving later on colder days, changing our departure locations based on the wind, and doing a lot of rescheduling around the weather. With that said, we do get a really nice day here and there this time of year, and we try to make the pretty ones count.

On the last trip I made to the Louisiana marsh, there were still shrimp jumping and pretty trout feeding underneath them. We were just bouncing around shell bottoms in four to five feet of water until we found the bait and the fish. The water was moving very well, and I’m sure that helped. Mixed in with those wonderful speckled trout were gigantic sheepshead, bull reds, and big black drum. We’re just waiting for the next good weather window to sneak back across.

In the meantime, the nearshore fishing has been good and steady. The water has been absolutely beautiful, clean and green. We are still seeing great numbers of sheepshead, white trout, redfish, speckled trout, and still a few flounders lingering. The fishing close to home is all about structure. We are fishing bridges, reefs, old piers, and anything else that is holding shells and barnacles. Live or fresh dead shrimp has been our go-to. Especially now with the big sheepshead moving in, shrimp outperforms just about everything else these days.

There are little to no boats on the water. A lot of people are opting to take advantage of our fabulous deer and duck hunting. There are certainly worse ways to spend the winter. It’s a wonderful time of year to be outdoors. We hope you can get out and enjoy it with your friends and family. Have fun and be safe.
