Water conditions are improving, and fishing should be decent. Nothing takes the place of live bait when conditions are less than ideal, so it’s worth tracking it down.
- by Sonny Schindler, Shore Thing Fishing Charters This time of year, the majority of our fishing is done in Mississippi waters. The nearshore reefs are a safe bet. The saltier the water gets, the better the fishing gets in the Bay of St. Louis. The big hurdle right now is getting hold of live bait, or even fresh dead shrimp. When you can get your hands on it, it is worth the extra miles of driving or extra money. You can catch plenty of fish on artificials, but this time of year with the uncertain weather, it’s best to come loaded for bear. Even a bag or two of dead shrimp can make a huge difference. It has been a mixed bag. The top three species we are catching right now are sheepshead, black drum, and redfish. There are still plenty of speckled trout to be had, but finding decent numbers and decent-sized fish will take a little hunting now. The easy fishing is done close to home, fishing rocks and structures with the shrimp. Happy Mardi Gras everybody. Please be safe and have fun. Enjoy this feature?
