Local fishermen are enjoying the mild weather and exciting action on bottom species right now. Just don't forget the bug spray!
- by Sonny Schindler, Shore Thing Fishing Charters
For now, we are drifting oyster reefs and shell bottoms in 5-4 feet of water with live shrimp. Mixed in with the trout have been big ole sheepshead, drag-screaming black drum, and bull reds. We are enjoying this action while we have it, but it’s a rare treat for us in February.

The nearshore bites have been consistent from Lake Borgne to Pass Christian. The puppy drum, sheepshead, and redfish have been steady on the inshore reefs, bridges, piers, and structures. It’s a lot of bottom fishing, and with that comes snags and lost tackle. Bring plenty of hooks, sinkers, swivels – and patience. Two things are guaranteed in this warm weather: bugs and long lines at the repair shop. Please don’t forget to bring bug spray, and if you need work done on your boat, you may not want to wait much longer. Enjoy this feature?
